Went for a spur of the moment ride today. I had a final early in the morning and decided to pick up my bike from the shop right after. I had some errands to run and figured why not, I would do them on the bike. Mind you, it's a 41 pound DH bike, with big ol' tires and I was definitely not dressed properly, but it was fun either way.
The ride probably ended up being around 15-20 miles. Not huge, but for what I was doing it on/in it certainly felt like it
Anyway, I snapped a few pics from around the city, I just had my iPhone on me, not my 12mp, so sorry 'bout the pics. Hey, at least it wasn't raining.
Here is a map of the today's route.

I went from one side of each photo to the other, to give some perspective.
In this pic, you can just make out bridge Number 1 that I crossed (Second Narrows) in the middle at the back of this pic. North and West Vancouver where I live is entirely separated by water from the rest of Vancouver.

The apartments on the left side of this photo are in North Vancouver and right by where I live. Photo was taken from the sea wall in stanley park.

My DH sled for the journey. Ouch. Yes, I do also own a road bike, but this one was fun for a spur of the moment trip. This taken against the sea wall in stanley park as well. My feet were taking a quick dip in the sea.

Lady on the Water?

Bridge Number 2 I had to cross (Lions Gate Bridge) The Hollywood based film company is named after it. That is West Van in the background.

View from back up in North Van during today's gloomy morning. That is downtown in the distance. This taken just a few blocks from my house near the apartments in the first photo.

Yeah, so excuse my terribly sh*tty photo skills, but I figured it was worth a post.

graham, way to go bro, ill try to do the same on my ride by the beach tomorrow

mikey, PM their shops address, more than likely i've either been to them or have at least bought something from them
a few quick snaps of 3 bikes i worked on this week
fixed up this "fixer upper" for my GF, its a custom made 47cm columbus frame with down tube shifters on some pretty decent shimano gearsets 10 speed, did a quick rattle can of kandyred, adjusted the derailers and brakes, pumped up the tires, re gripped it with gel tape, so its ready for the weekend

then worked on another bike for my cousin: $25 huffy mtb with a ridged frame that we did a "poor mans" single speed conversion, rattle can matte black, Bontrager grips, new brake cable and lever, new GEAX tires, some cushy seat i found in my garage, and a new chain

and as i mentioned a few days ago, did some minor things to my personal bike

actually added a set of FUBAR toe cages and straps today, sorry no pics yet
ready to ride in the morning

^^^ Nice fixie. What front wheel is that? Looked like an Aerospoke at first glance, but I don't think it is.

its a Teny wheel in 26"
and its not a fixie its actually a coaster brake single speed... i love the clean look the fixies, but not quite ballsy enough to take the plunge yet.
pedaling was easy but braking while trying to not use the hand brakes was quite a challenge

thanx!

Hey guys, looking to get into cycling. Total n00b, trying to learn.
My use will be for daily commuting to school (minus the winter) and would love the option of trail riding a bit if I get bit like many do. But primarily this will be just another way to stay fit and commute to school. 5k trip each way, nothing crazy.
The fixed gears are new to me. They look cool. Koi I love the look of yours. I used to love skidding around as a kid. But it would remove the option to get into trail riding. Hmmm. Something to think about.
I have found a couple of good deals on bikes that would give me some versatility/options for going more off road. The first is a Trek 4300 $500 CAN (hard tail), mint condition, in flat black/all black with disc brakes (just like the one pictured in this thread) which is obviously aesthetically pleasing but I want to know this. Is it better than the other deal I've found which is a bit older Trek Y-3 (full suspension, no disc brakes) for $250 CAN that is in great condition.
Will I regret not getting a disc brake setup? Ultimately I'll be getting new road tires for commuting.Last edited by lifeoftheparty.; 08-20-2010 at 03:14 AM.

thanx for ressurecting the thread bro.
recently i've been riding FIXED GEAR a lot...might be frowned upon but 90% of the time im also brakeless
now that thats out of the way, i have a few suggestions as far as a trail bike that can double as a fixie/single speed:
the SE Racing Stout, 29" wheels, single speed, can handle both the path and the pavement
SE Bikes - 29" Stout
if you want a more relaxed style of riding but that can handle both path and pavement look into 700C hybrid bikes, if you like the look and speed of a geared road bike but want som eoffroad capabilities look into CycloCross bikes, other than that i've seen some real road fixed gear bikes with thicker wheel/tire combo, mostly for trickin, but i dont see why you cant take them on a bit of dirt as well

Not a problem! Thanks for the quick reply!
Any suggestions on the two mentioned? Or steer clear of Trek? Being a n00b I know they are big name and typically carry some higher price tags. The 4300 runs for $800+ CAN here and is nearly new. I am trying to get it for $400 CAN, but we'll see.
The first:

The second:

They seem like a good deal and they would offer some variety?
Is it completely impractical to ride a full suspension setup on the road?
And is there such a thing as a on road/off road hybrid tire?
Last question, is there an advantage, other than for looks, to that Trak Attack wheel setup on your SE?
20 questions, sorry.
