College Football 2012-2013
This is a continuation of the 2011-1012 college football thread I started last year…
Hopefully, we can have some friendly debates in this thread and talk about each week’s match ups, etc.
So, until the season starts…I figured we could call out our squads, and maybe trade some predictions for the upcoming season. I know I could go to a sports forum, but 1) most the dudes on those sites are way too crazy for me 2) I love L4P and its members and it has a “sports” section and 3) I’m too lazy to monitor more than 1 forum!
As I mentioned in last year’s thread, my wife and I are USC athlete alums and are now HUGE fans. We have had season tickets for a few years now and go to at least 1 road game per year. (Syracuse at New Meadowlands Stadium this year!)
We’re no fair weather fans: I committed to John Robinson and USC in 1997, played in 3 bowl games in 5 years, and only won one bowl game! So I know what it was like before Bush graced us with his presence.
This season: Hell…I don’t know WHAT’S gonna happen this season!!! My guess today is that USC will be legit IF we can stay healthy…we have Oregon and ND at home this year, so that helps.
What do you guys think about the new playoff system? I say it’s FAR from perfect, but it’s better than nothing.

Not exactly what I wanted, but it will work. For me, it's important to maintain the final bowl rivalries (mainly the rose).
I am a fair-weather Oregon fan at the moment...as long as they keep fast guys and execute the spread. Otherwise, I'd have to say I am a UT (vols) just because I live there and more familiar with they players.

I feel like routing for an SEC team would be a full-time job! So much going on down there. Oregon is fun/crazy to watch...particularly in person. The refs actually slow them down!
I'm OK with the new playoff...but I don't understand why they can't just adopt the Div. 1-AA playoff system. 16 teams, NFL-style home games at the schools, etc.- 1971 El Camino: Blueprint Racing 383 stoker/Tremec TKO 600 5 Speed /3:73 Posi/Bench Seat/Lap Belts/Drum Brakes/Kinda’ Rusty

I can't wait for football season to start - I don't really follow any other sports outside of college football. Spring and summer seem to drag on forever, and then the season goes by so quickly! I think USC is poised to have a big year with Barkley not leaving for the NFL; I wasn't a fan of Kiffen when at Tennessee, but he seems to be maturing back at USC again.
I'm not sure what to expect for Va Tech this year - the defense should be incredible, as we return a ton of guys and the D-Line in particular should be a monster. We had a lot of turn-over on offense though, and the O-line is the biggest concern. Logan returns at QB and seems to be the real deal, RB's are plug-n-play at VT, and even the WRs should be good again. We replaced 4 guys on our line though, so not sure what to expect till we get a glimpse of how well they're playing together.
Around the rest of the league - who are you guys expecting to be the Title contenders this year? Lots of shake-up with the new conference teams, so I think we'll have an exciting year. There are several talented teams this year as well, I think there will be more really strong teams this year than we've had over the past few.
I think the playoff is a step in the right direction. It's not the perfect solution, but a complete change to a straight playoff would be too drastic of a change overnight. I think they're trying really hard to preserve the long-standing traditional bowl games without diminishing the prestige of those games, but also lead into more of a playoff that will crown a true champion.
I actually liked the BCS system for ranking teams, I kinda wish they kept that for a ranking system. Then at the end of the season used the results to fill in a playoff field. It sounds like the new ranking committee will still work in a similar fashion though.

The First Coaches Poll has been released:
NCAA Football Preseason Rankings 2012: USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll Released | Bleacher Report
What do you guys think? This poll was finalized before USC got Silas Redd...we're going big game hunting this year...over-stuffed ducks, Tigers, and Crimson Elephants! ;-)- 1971 El Camino: Blueprint Racing 383 stoker/Tremec TKO 600 5 Speed /3:73 Posi/Bench Seat/Lap Belts/Drum Brakes/Kinda’ Rusty

Roll. Damn. Tide. Big game Nov 3 between Bama and LSU that should decide 1 of the championship teams if all goes according to plan. Should be a great season and hopefully #7 in a row for the boys down south.
