Chuck,
I know you had all sorts of special introductions and connections, but I'm sure whatever I happen across (even if it's mediocre by JDM standards) will be a far cry from any American counterpart.
I am planning on eating an insane amount of takoyaki, okonomiyaki and yakitori.

well, i would implore you, and i will nag you while you're out here, to eat at this sushi restaurant. i promise - it will change your life.
without alcohol, it's probably $200 - $225. no connections needed, just someone that speaks japanese to make the reservation for you.

Chuck,
I am in, and while my dad doesn't generally enjoy sushi beyond the mega round-eye California roll, he absolutely appreciates the experience, so he was actually pretty excited too. Is it in Kyoto or Tokyo?
On the plus side, one of my good friends is Japanese and speaks fluently, as does my dad's buddy Hiroshi who is hosting us and organizing the race events, so we should be able to make the reservation happen.

it's in Tokyo, near Roppongi Hills - i bet the experience would be even better with someone that could talk to the chef. i'll email you the phone number (need to dig it up)

I cannot even begin to explain how much I am looking forward to this. My dad tells me his buddy Hiroshi loves to eat too, so this should be an epic experience.
