Default Masa (NYC) - Best sushi in America - wow

a friend and I went to Masa on Thurs. my last meal was amazing and i wanted to confirm it was that special. it is.

in fact, it's the best sushi in america - without question. Urasawa (LA), as good as it is, is still a notch below.

this meal cost us $900/person (yes, you read that right) w/ alcohol; it's obviously very expensive, exceedingly so, but it's highly recommended if you want to eat "the best." basic meal is $450, we added a $100 kobe supplement (not worth the price), alcohol, tax, and tip. this is the Enzo of sushi meals and you will pay for it - bring the lube.

it is not the best restaurant in the country, but you will eat the best sushi, where the rice is just as important as the freshness of the fish.

they don't allow pictures but here's a list of what i ate:

    - (raw) sea bass w/ shiso
    - toro tartar w/ caviar
    - various fried vegetables
    - uni risotto w/ summer truffle - truffles were of surprising quality
    - plate of kobe beef
    - foie & lobster shabu shabu
    - shabu shabu soup

    and then the sushi parade:
    - toro x2
    - shimaji
    - japanese fluke
    - deep sea snapper
    - sweet shrimp
    - grilled white fish
    - grilled scallop
    - grilled toro
    - clam
    - saba mackerel
    - grilled shitake
    - octopus w/ (potent) black truffle dollop
    - hokkaido uni
    - squid w/ sea salt
    - summer truffle ball sushi
    - sea eel
    - grilled unagi
    - toro roll
    - pickled lotus wrapped over a shiso leaf topped w/ sour plum - *outstanding* finish
    - seconds of uni, grilled toro, and saba

if you can afford it, and you want to eat 'the best', my highest recommendation. absolutely incredible.

    Chuck,

I am jealous; there will be a day when I can join you without second-guessing the expense! How did your connoisseur friend from Toronto find the experience?

pixxflix - no other locations. they do have a "masa bar" next door but that severely pales in comparison. don't fall for that trap.

turbology - my pickier-than-me friend thought that it was mostly flawless. trust me, i don't want it to be this expensive - definitely the most expensive restaurant in the US.

pearlcoupe - this is the place in the Time Warner center. it has a very simple small sign that merely says "masa." i think you did see it - next to Per Se.

pearl - reservations aren't that hard since it's so insanely expensive. i think i made them 1 month in advance but i bet you could get in on 2 weeks notice if you were slightly flexible w/ date and/or time.

    illgt2 - go now
