jean georges was the first *real* high-end meal i had, way back in 2001 or so, and it made me realize the difference between good and great. this was before he had 10,000,000 restaurants to maintain. i think that has had some effect on quality control.

that is why i like going for lunch during the week days. the price is *much* cheaper for the exact same food; and JG is often there. 3 courses for $30 (or something crazy) and $15 for each additional course.

it makes for a great lunch.

I was just about to post your affinity for lunch at JG for those very reasons, Chuck. Always a safer bet as the lunchtime rush isn't as hectic, also generally requiring less prep and pre-cooking, chances are the food will be "fresher."

    the very best:
    - french laundry (yountville, ca)
    - manresa (los gatos, ca)
    - ubuntu (napa)
    - urasawa (la)
    - masa (nyc)

    very good:
    - alex (las vegas)
    - coi (sf)
    - jean georges (nyc)
    - bouley (nyc)
    - mccradys (charleston - not rated)
    - bacchanalia (atl - not rated)
    - alinea (chi)
    - le bernardin (nyc)
    - lampreia (seattle)
    - il grano (la)
    - quince (sf)
    - momofuku ssam (nyc)

this is by no means definitive and i've probably missed more than a few...

not interested - not my style - it might be technically perfect but they are nothing more than an expensive chain restaurant, with outposts world-wide.

the food lacks soul & character. it is the difference between buying a LV bag and one made by an artisan.
