Zarzuela on Hyde and Union has fantastic tapas. I've been going to gordos for years too.

    Ok, this is for Raw-mean...

Best Restaurant (in the country) - Manresa (Los Gatos) - it's not super-formal but you won't find a chef (outside of Urasawa) that cares more for the food that he serves. Experimental but the focus is still on flavor instead of theatrics. His vegetables are the best in the area MTK; and no one cooks fish better in the US.

    Teaser pics:

    -------------

Best Restaurant in Monterey Area - Marinus (Carmel Valley) - masterful, pretty much sums up that often-used expression "california cuisine" - very fresh high-quality ingredients that are tweaked to near perfection:

    -------------

Best Restaurant in Napa that's not called French Laundry - Ubuntu (Napa) - all-vegetarian, no meat, but you'll never miss it. The chef used to cook at Manresa and the national accolades are piling up very quickly. Casual atmosphere but very high quality food.

    Full Review: http://chuckeats.com/blog3/2007/11/2...ot-vegetarian/

    -------------

Honorable Mention for Napa - Meadowood (Napa) - The chef is still young and he will be a great talent in 3-5 years. I expect his stint at Meadowood to really define who will become. A very strong meal.

    -------------

Best Sashimi (in the country) - Sawa (Sunnyvale)
    - The best raw fish in America. Period. Hard to get in unless you're a customer - if you want to go, I will call for you (if i don't join you.) More than happy to do a group event here too if there's interest (cost ~ $175/person if there are at least 5 of us.)

    -------------

Best Italian - Quince (SF) - a very careful chef whose pasta is to die for. (If you can't get in, Delfina, A16, and Incanto are very good too.)

Best Ice Cream - Bi-Rite Creamer's Ginger ice cream - mmmmm.....
