America's Best Restaurants
i have started threads like this at the other places - i'll do the same here. i will only post the best restaurants (as i eat at them.) i'll update this first post with links (in some sort of order of preference):
Manresa (Los Gatos, CA) - http://www.chuckeats.com/2008/06/24/...summer-report/
Urasawa (LA) - http://chuckeats.com/blog3/2008/05/12/urasawa-la/
French Laundry (Yountville, CA) - http://www.chuckeats.com/2008/06/17/...ng-the-secret/
to start - Urasawa in LA. this and Manresa (Los Gatos) are the two best restaurants in the country, bar none. there are 10 seats per night at an intimate counter on rodeo drive - you sit down, he serves. Hiro, the chef, does everything himself - the flower arrangements, the ice sculptures, and, most importantly, the food. some of the best sushi in the country, *the* best Japanese cooking, and some of the best sashimi. what differentiates it is the care - no chef in this country cares more for the food they are serving.
cost: $300-350 pp depending on what he's serving for the day.

yes luluinatutu - i would rate it as one of the top 10 (probably #5 or 6) in the country.
unfortunately, i went to Delilah's beforehand, drank Belgian beer all afternoon, and then my friend and I had about 3 bottles of wine at Alinea. i think it's the closest i've ever been to getting kicked out of a restaurant.

my favorite foie gras dish anywhere, france or united states:

uni, peas, and radishes:

out of 6 or 7 French Laundry meals, i think it was the best one i've had.

L'Auberge Chez Francois in Great Falls, VA just outside DC. Was 5 star when I worked my two summers in DC, don't know if it still is. Ate there courtesy of Uncle Sam a few times.
