Default What is a good brokerage fee for selling a house these days?

I am nearing the time here to list our first home for sale, and I know times have changed quite a bit in the past few years. The only person I know that has sold a home recently said 4.5% was about the norm (midwest/Michigan specifically) of what his realtor charged. This is not a foreclosure or shortsale.

Anyone have any experience or opinions on what realtors rates are going at right now?

In my area (MD, DC), 6% is the norm, although if you know the right people they'll drop to 4.5 or 5%.

My agency gets 7%, but we will go to 6% if the client has an issue. Of that, 50% goes to the other broker if there are 2 offices involved in the sale, and on higher end homes 1% of the 7% goes into an "advertising" account to help with promoting that property. Nowadays people will look for the agent with the lowest %, what they don't realize is that when an agent is searching the MLS and they see a home with a low % vs a home with a high %, more times then not they won't bother showing the low % listing.

6% is norm for any property under 1.5 mil. You can negotiate for properties list for higher. This is for N.cali.

6 to 7%. Would you work as hard for 4.5% as you would for 6 or 7%. Homes are sitting on the market longer and take more to sell than they did 5 or 6 years ago. If an agent is willing to take less than 6% I would make sure I asked what kind of marketing they will be doing and for how long.

Interesting feedback. I'm sure it varies by region too. Reason I ask is my friend listed his house (Michigan) with the same agent he used as a buyer and they dropped it to 4.75% and did a great job for him. Sold his other house quickly and was great to work with. I guess that was a great deal for him, someone I may need to consider knowing that.

    OMG !!!

Here in Belgium, properties are cheaper and the norm is... 3% !!
And many agents in Brussels charge only... 1.5 %.
I spent 90% of my money on women, sports cars and drink. The rest I wasted. (George Best)
