NC or FL
So heres the deal, me and the girlfriend are going to be looking to move out to NC (Charlotte probably) or FL (Miami probably) the beginning of next year. I took all automotive technology classes to get an associates in that (I realize now that that wont pay for $hit) and shes going to a specialized business school for accounting.
I posted up a while back about ideas of where to move to, just general opinions, but now I'm serious. I am wondering if anyone on here knows how an out of state application works. There are a few dealerships I would like to apply to for a service advisor, but none have applications on the internet, and even if they did would you ever hire someone from out of state you haven't met?
What are some ideas for getting a job states away, I don't have the income here to afford to fly out to a company that might not hire me. I barely make 40 hours a week at $9.50 an hour, that's a car payment and insurance and nothing extra. Cant even afford to move out comfortably on this paycheck!
Just looking for honest ideas and help. Thanks.Last edited by EuroTech500; 01-25-2011 at 08:16 PM. Reason: Adding info

Most any place you apply at won't hire you without a face to face interview. Have you ever considered some place like Carmax, and then transferring stores? I've got a friend that is a buyer for them and he likes it for the most part, and I'm pretty sure they just opened up the ability to transfer to another store not long ago (not sure how long you have to work there before being able to transfer).

Well see, I work at a family owned, pre-owned Mercedes dealership and service place, and there's really no other place around here that is as good as the management here. I worked at our local Audi dealership...but man...you have the pressure of being fired for looking at someone the wrong way there.
I would like to retain the field I am in, Mercedes, or even BMW, but there isnt anywhere around here looking to hire a 21 year old for high end retail.
I have applied at a few banks, with no replies, to see about working for about a year and then transferring. No luck there either.2003 MB CLK500: 5% Tint, Removed Muffler, Gutted Cats.

Your mistake is waiting for a reply. I am 21 aswell and any job i have wanted, I got because I didn't wait for them. I showed up every day but the first day, I walked in and alerted the manager I sent an application and resume. Look professional, let them know you want it and that it would be a mistake if they didn't take you in. You have to back it up though.

lol I actually did try this approach and got shut down. I went into our new MB, BMW, Etc dealership and got an application. Went in the next day resume and application in hand, while wearing dressy clothes, went to the service managers office and asked him to speak with me for a few minutes. Talked to him for about a half hour, and left on good terms. Two days later I went back in and asked him if he had thought any more about me. He told me no, and I didn't do myself any favors by talking to him first.
This same approach is what got me hired at Audi, but that manager also got fired a month later and everyone I knew has quit since then...
Kind of a harder approach to things applying to businesses I haven't worked in the fields before: IE banks and such.2003 MB CLK500: 5% Tint, Removed Muffler, Gutted Cats.

I have been in retail my whole life and banking is what I am going for currently aswell. I wasn't even gunna apply to suntrust but the lady working there liked me and told me to apply and give her my resume. I guess it's diff fields that have diff ways of pulling people. However, I've had my fair share with retailers who told me to get lost when I checked up on an app and they said they'd call if they were interested. 2 months gone by and help sign is still up. wtf.

Yea makes no sense, what a waste of efforts. Its a shame to look over the people with the actual desire to work somewhere, and then to just hire some random bum that put in an app 3 months ago who just wanted a place to work...

Please don't do it. I'm getting the hell out of here before summer starts, I lived in FL for a year and some months I miss it terribly!

So you would recommend against NC then? I figured FL would have an abundance of "blue hairs" and it would be less desirable.

The real question is, do you want your Spanish in Miami or in North Carolina?
Down here in Miami, a lot of jobs want Spanish speakers now, if you cant speak the language here.. there's someone else who can. And Charlotte is becoming a new hot spot for my amigos.Hazing GDI's since 2011
