    My steps usually are:

    1) Deciding on residential style - 2 story, bungalow, ranch, estate etc
    2) Drafting up floor plans
    3) Revising floor plans to note of any structural issues. I consult my father who specializes in civil engineering (roads, bridges, but can also be applied somewhat to home construction) on guestimated stress loads and load bearing walls, ideal plumbing etc.
    4) Exterior design
    5) Interior design

Most of my knowledge is observational from checking out lots of new show homes, asking questions with sales reps, and taking note of any notable features (lot sizes, slopes and elevations, water treatment, sun light direction, moldings, craftsmanship etc). It took a while to learn the lingo but over time (and moving houses 3 times in over 5 years), I took note of measurements of rooms, doors, bathtubs, windows, kitchen counters, kitchen cabinets, and the like to understand how to properly convey scale and perspective in my design. To reiterate, I am by no means an architect. I just enjoy good architecture.

House prices around my area are very inflated in my opinion so its very hard to extrapolate how much these homes would be to construct any particular location. Variations on lot price, demand, labor, materials, taxes, municipal bylaws, and the list goes on make it difficult to put a fixed price.

If I were to put a price tag on the first Tudor style home for example, up here it'd be easily passing the $1.3M mark simply because the finishings in the foyer are a mix of acrylic stone and exotic woods, along with the 2 story waterfall.

The Dendrobium Fortress, well - damn you'll need truly L4P money for that.
That's cool to hear. As someone with a background in architecture, civil engineering and real estate I can appreciate your insight and thoughts on design. If you we're ever interested in working as a consultant for an architect I think you fit well. You have the design stage down which is a huge part in invisioning new designs. If you couple that with learning the skills to turn that thought into a structure you could have a nice career for yourself.

A good way to establish budget is a square foot price. One of the biggest drivers of sq. ft. price is the finishes as you've mentioned. Lot price wouldn't be included. In my area a project like your Tudor style could range anywhere from $400 /sq. ft. and up. The structure is fairly simple and straight forward, however the choices on materials and finishes is almost endless. For example some people would be happy using Ikea for that kitchen and you could probably buy all the cabinets for $30k or so (maybe less). Other people might choose to do the same look by importing cabinets from Europe maybe from Poliform for probably $150k in cabinets alone.

^Yes thank you. I usually do excel spreadsheets for each room/hallway/living space and adjust the square footage per area accordingly i.e. bathrooms are $300/square ft while a bedroom is maybe $250 due to less plumbing/facilities/finishing - this is all excluding land naturally.

Here's another project I wrapped up in 2012. Again more traditional. I like this mission style business. I've added the floor plans so you can sort of see my process.

These are fantastic. Find it strangely relaxing looking at your designs. Good work.

Some feng shui issues, if you believe in that stuff; I like most of the designs.

This thread has been a bit quiet lately. I've been spending more time on my career hunt but have still kept at it with new designs.

I'm working on two projects now which are at the complete opposite sides of square footage.
One is a 1700 square ft bungalow with basement which I've finalized the floor plans and exterior; just working on the interior.

The second is something I've always wanted to get around is a contemporary/modern 2 story home with a focus on open air elements - triple garage and approx 3500 square feet space ideally for a warm year round climate (Dubai UAE, Hawaii, or SE Asia). I'm aiming for something you would see with interior and exterior elements as below:

Here's the front and rear elevation of a smaller single family size bungalow I'm working on the interior design for.
This is something I want to build in my lifetime. Looking at $700k for lot, building, and taxes where I am.
