For many it's investment purposes. For others they can just afford it, and often like to entertain and host big parties.

I certainly understand both of those reasons, as well as large families, etc. For a single, younger guy who spends a lot of time out of the house though -- why the 3k square feet? I see this a lot and it just baffles me. I've come to assume it's just another symptom of our over-consumption.

No not really. I work with a guy who is single and owns a 19k sqft house and the reason he gives people for it is, I can afford it why not. Personally I buy houses of such dimensions because A)I can and B) The amount of houses on the market with such big floor plans is much lower then the amount of average homes with say 4k sqft and in addition, the market segment has a lot of people who can afford to pay straight cash so it can benefit you in the long run I.E. Long term investment

I'd prefer a little house, and 6 car garage.

I'll take my house and build in another 4 slots since the current 4 won't do it for me.

I am with mike, but for me 4 to 5 thousand sqft is the right number. Currently I am right around 3k but planning on a remodel and expansion in the upcoming months.

2.3k - 3.5k sq ... anything bigger I start feeling lonely ... lol. I hate big houses personally. The fact that like small houses sucks on the east coast. You can't find a good neighborhoods to live in unless you spend 750k+ ... and if you do you end up with a huge house.

Nope, I am married with 2 kids. If I was single I would be living in a penthouse in the city. Game over.
