Anyone else? 991 just not for me...............
I am a Porsche owner and love the brand.. from the balance it strikes as a car to be able to do many things great as an automobile... reliability, performance, styling and to its back seats but never loosing the real sports car edge IMO.
That said, I am just not feeling it in the new 991 for more than one reason. For me a sports car is my fun car as I have other vehicles for daily use and not looking for my Porsche to be the ultimate GT touring car, family car, long distance driver I can track but a car that can do the above if needed but still #1 be that sports car I always wanted to own since a kid…
I think the 991 has some great attributes that may appeal to more people and that is what the brand I am sure wants as sales is always the end game.... its bigger, more roomy, it faster and handles better (at least what reports tell us...) and does a great job it seems progressing but yet still being clearly Porsche design wise. But for me, I am a customer that was hoping to see the newest 991 go in another direction.... or at the least stay on track to current 997.2 models. Tighter, more connected to the driver, more intimate experience and less grand touring like luxo....The cockpit I view on current 997 is great, very connected to the driver, stylish and sporty... when engaged I feel like I am driving a Porsche 911. The new design is amazing no doubt but just can’t see myself thrilled to take that interior to the track, drive it aggressively and give me the same enjoyment I get from my current interior... same with the outside…. It looks nice, not debating that but clearly in this car we see less drive towards a true sporty designed car and more to a grand touring beast… IMO just not what has drawn me to own a 911 car...
I am sure the car will be a great seller, eager to see the turbo, and GT cars come out... but for me so far not all that eager to get into a bigger car that seems to have gone bigger and more luxurious then a bit more Raw, driver connected, slimmer even and just more sportscar like.
My next car will be a 997.1 GT3rs and not a new 991... sure VW will sell a ton of em, just none to this guy....

Agree with a lot of what you are saying but I think ultimately Porsche may finally be getting ready to let the Cayman out of the box and be the "sportier track car" that we all know it can be if Porsche lets it.
I do think the new interior is hideous actually didn't like he style in the Panamera and damn sure don't like it in a 911, just not as edgy as the car should be.
Oh and another thing that LCD screen should not be in them at all if someone wants a techfest car go buy a GTR leave the Porsche's to purists.

You're not alone.
Having driven the 991 Carrera S I must report that Porsche finally has done the same thing that Ferrari, Lambo and even BMW have been doing with their latest modes.
They all drive brilliant, they all are very well build and very fast. To anybody who isnt into cars properly, this wont mean much, but the biggest flaw that all of these have is character. Or much rather the lag of it. They all had their very own back in the day but now they all feel the same. All car makers are focusing on speed, efficiency, economics and a great spec sheet.
Having driven all hot 911 from the 996 GT3 upwards I find the new 911 the least interesting. I also dont like the looks but thats just me. I must say though, the 7 speed manual is a nice touch and a nice attempt of Porsche to match efficency and the purists preferred transmission. The car sounds "better" than the 997 Carrera's and handles like a porsche should- so credits here but that was to be expected. The car grips alot better than the 997 but its become way too big 4 my taste. At straight line speed its much smoother and feels much more steady, which is also a very good thing.
So those are all things that should make me love this car but the simple fact is, I dont.Last edited by [Petrolsexual]; 01-17-2012 at 07:23 PM.

i wouldn't buy it for the simple fact that the power isn't really a serious bump over the 997.2. 5hp for the base and 15 for the S. i don't like the interior, and i don't like the rear end treatment.
do i think porsche will let the cayman take over the true sports car catagory, no, but i think people will start to prefer it after they test drive a 991 and find it too unsporty. and a 991 gt3 will probably edge 130k base, a little to much for a purist who just wants to drive a simple 911.
i'll wait for a 997.1 or .2 to come down in price to something i can afford. i really was waiting for MY14 for the 50th anniversary, but i don't like the 991 enough, nor do i think it'll end up being anything special, or at least anything more than the 20 billion 997's introduced in the last yr of production- Dave
most of what i say is a joke, unless it's serious

Personally I can't wait to get a 991 turbo.

I love it. Cant get enough of the styling (inside and out) and it has raised the bar as the benchmark higher again despite the very lofty one set by the 997. Considering the 991 S is pulling GTR/458 type numbers (11.8 1/4 mile, .99-1.04 skidpas, 74.1 slalom, 7:40 ring times) it only goes to show how good this car is. Just wait for the turbo and GTx models to destroy anything in their path. I personally like that all the reviews have said its still a very connected car, but more composed and handles like a mid engined car (even though it will never be called so). It as Ive said before, may be the best all around car the world has ever seen and we are only working with low end 911 models thus far.

Driving a 458 very recently it seems like they are all taking that leap. More luxury features more electronics and on and on. Personally I love it because they are as you also mentioned are all purpose cars. You can comfortably drive them as a daily but also get them on a track and enjoy them as sports cars. If you want a raw feeling you have to almost go back in time and buy a Ferrari CS as even the Scud is not as raw. Personally I love the brand and anything and everything they have ever done.

"may be the best all around car the world has ever seen" You hit the exact point why I am just not liking the 991. I don't want the worlds best all around car....I want a great looking sports car that evokes true passion (like when i see a 993TT on the road...) first that does many other things fairly well second...I have other cars for that to do these other things. I appreciate the benchmark set, think its amazing for just that comment and those looking for a truly incredible car that does so many things so great... I loved this about Porsche, but in the past seems they did this while still keeping the 911 model one that just connected with the driver on many levels from styling to performance etc........ Now the size, luxo interior, etc says this is a great looking car, amazing technology, still does a ton of things great but taken a back seat is this being a Porsche that's evokes a connection for me I have always had with 911's...
That said, this new 991 in a turbo or a gt3, gt2, rs etc.... I am sure will be amazing and look forward to seeing them as well...

Wow. Seriously?
I mean the only reason i won't buy is because a new car is not on the cards. One should embrace technology and that is what Porsche are the best at doing. They hug technology like no other whilst providing the driver with the maximum connection to the car.
I would rather be driving one of these than the old school widow makers.2008 Infiniti g35x Sedan
