    Default Inexpensive lighting gear?

I've been told i should invest in some lighting gear, Not quite sure what i would need. But a few of my friends have suggested i invest a bit further. So what would i need a few lights and some shades? Suggestions would be nice, But for now does anyone know of any lighting that isn't extremely expensive?

You should probably start with some speedlights. Do you shoot with Canon or Nikon? If Nikon, they will be SB600's. If Canon, there will be Canon 580ex, 430ex, etc. There are less expensive chinese brands, but quality is always a question mark with them.

I'm in the same boat as well. It's been suggested that I pick up a few Vivitar 285's with some triggers to wet my feet. Would it be beneficial to get some umbrellas as well?

Yea, you will probably need some sort of light modifiers. Umbrellas would be a good place to start.

I currently have a speedlite and I'm debating on buying another or buying my first alien bee. Any suggestions?

I shoot more automotive shots than anything so I'm not sure what is the better choice. In the near future I plan to have a few of each but can't decide for right now.

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

You can start small as long as you are not trying to fight the sun at mid day you will do just fine with a pair of speed lights. that's how I did the Orange Corvette that I recently shoot.

Check out the Strobist blog. Tons of info there on startup setups for lighting and how to use them.

Start with some speed lights and build from there. Same with the modifiers - umbrellas will be your cheapest starting point.
    I take photos. Check it!
