    Default Night pics...help

Need some pointers. I was at a show in Austin 2 weekends ago and at night they have a cruise. Well I couldn't get any good pictures of the cruise and it was pissing me off. I don't know how to set up the settings for night shots and was wondering if you all could help. Here are a couple pictures so you can see what I'm talking about. The pictures had an orange tint to them. I was using my tripod until it broke. Then I was doing my best to keep it still. What settings should I have the camera on to help with night shots? Thanks in advance.

the orange is partially your white balance, if you NEED to take photos at night, tripod all the way, at the lowest ISO possible to reduce noise

Well the tripod was there but right before sundown it broke so I was pretty screwed. The camera is an entry level SLR, the Nikon D40

I played with the ISO a bit but kept it at 400. 200 was too low and above 400 was getting way too much noise.

looks like the shutter was not set right for the amount of camera movement -- try locking it down

Yeah, you can't do much with night photos if you dont have a steady base. If your tripod broke, you should just use the ground next time. Leave it at the lowest ISO possible. Also as DTM said the orange color cast is from your white balance. Either switch it to tungsten or consult your manual to see how you set a custom white balance.

Okay thanks guys, I will have to look in the manual cause I've never messed(or knew you could)with the white balance. I'll keep playing with it and hopefully get some better pictures.
