I didn't want to muddy up Verone's thread Re: 24-70 vs 24-105 with my pics so I'm posting my answer here - also because this thread has a club "slant" to it..
Ahh, classic dilemna. For general everyday use, I would have to suggest the 24-105. I've used both (had the 24-105 for a year, then sold it for the 24-70 and have had that for a year). The 24-105 sure is nice for its light weight and extra reach but that reach is not "much more" than 70, I guess this is arguable. If I need to get closer, I just walk closer.
If I can, of course. I do miss the IS of the 105 sometimes though. But, boy did the 2.8 save my ass Friday night at Sound-Bar. Also, the 2.8 gives you more creative control with your shots, DOF and bokeh-wise.
Have a look at this gallery if you like, all the shots on the bike were taken at 2.8 - the lighting was horrible and I had to use the faster speed to ensure clarity and minimize the blown lighting. It is heavy though, but manageable.

It was very nice to have the option of 2.8, in a bind like this. I could have probably done SOMETHING if I had the 105 in this situation, but it would have been harder. Ideally I would choose to have both - I will probably buy another 24-105 soon - it is a great general walk-around lens.
This shot is handheld at 2.8 ISO 800, this was taken outside at night, with ambient lighting + flash. It would have been difficult to do this shot with the 24-105.

2 shots from Spybar last night at 2.8 ISO 800 - not much processing on these shots. Notice there is not any blurring from camera shake - IS is not needed at this speed and ISO.

^ Just finished reading said thread; and I'm not thinking of grabbing the 24-70 for myself.
Shots look great as usual!

Haha there are a lot of clothing mishaps at that club. Cool pictures!
