Default Want to learn to play Guitar

Anyone have a recommended DVD or whatever to learn to play Guitar at home. I want to play acoustic. I have decent background with music, played the Viola from 5th through 9th grade, so I have good rhythm & good sound.

    Any recommendations?

    Nope, Youtube is your friend.

To get started you should try to learn a few basic chords. E, A, D aso.
You can find them on Youtube and also on some websites(google )
With those you can start playing easy small songs, Wonderwall for example is a great song to start with.

Really not that hard to play, alot of impotant chords in it and you get a really good feeling for your guitar.

Also if you played the Viola for a few years you probably can read notes, which makes the whole thing alot easier!

So I would try to start learning from youtube and of course you can ask here on L4P, alot of users play for several years now and sure gone help you out if you have a question.

Just be patient and have fun doing it.

Learn your basic scales, Pentatonic, etc. If you go to Ultimate-Guitar.com and search beginner scales people have already done everything for you. The most important thing is to not give up! Ive been playing for about 6 years and I play mostly Glam Rock like Van Halen, GNR, Ratt, Poison, etc. Learning how to read TABS is helpful and then you can go to the same website I just posted for you, and actually learn how to play songs yourself. That will help boost your confidence. Good luck!

Sure thing, Tabs helped me alot when I first started playing and even to this day. Some people however will just do random stuff and therefore some songs are incorrect. But just look for the songs that have a high star rating.

To read tab is simple, yet easy to complicate. There will be numbers, those are the frets. (the wooden space in between the metal strips on the guitar.) They decend from 1 through usually 21-24ish. All guitars are different. The strings are 6, and the fattest string is your E, the thinnest is the other lowercase e. Tuning from 6-1 should be E,A,D,G,B,E for standard tuning which alot of songs are played in.

This guy does a decent job at explaining tabs. YouTube - How to Read Guitar Tabs

That should keep you entertained for awhile! Good luck

Good luck. I started taking lessons a few years ago but got frustrated. I had already been able to play piano and went back to that but seeing these links and this thread has peeked my interest again.
