    A little vague...

    How are you going to use it? Commuter? Track? Partial of both?

    How many miles do you think you'll ride a year?

    What budget for repairs? (I.E. Ducati vs. Honda)

    I've had an old 748 since it was new. Love the bike, but for the amount the maintenence would have been for the miles I rode it the first couple years I could have had an extra used CBR. If you can't afford that, or can't do your own, pass them by. The new ones are better, but nothng beats Japanese reliability IMO.

    A guy I used to ride with had a Aprilia RSV Factory. Great engine, but last I heard he was figuring out mechanical gemlins and every time the battery got disconnected he magically had a new bike (zeroed miles).

    Another friend has an RC51. Japanese Duc....awesome, but are long in the tooth now.

    If I were to get a new bike today, I'd probably go Honda or Yamaha - strictly personal preference.

    Suzuki GSXR (any engine displacement) all my buddies that ride swear by these little crotch rockets...good price, reliable and fast...it just doesnt give out the same tune and aura as a DUCATI
