Default 04 STI Moving to Chicago from the Bay..

    Howdy,

I'm moving to Chicago from the Bay for a job. I'm loading up my car and roof cargo box to get my stuff out there. Proposed route below. I do have a few questions for you future fellow chicagoans:

    1. has anyone made the drive from Cali to Chi? If so, any comments...I want to get a GoPro for this drive
    2. good places to hit up when I get to Chi?
    3. a good shop to get a tune up after driving 2000 miles?
    4. good parking lots/fields to play in the snow?
    5. anyone else from the bay/cali?
    6. any other info that might help my move!

    Thanks!

Tentative Route: i-80 to Winnemucca, NV to Cheyenne, WY to Iowa City, IA to Chicago, IL.

Depart: the 9th around 2pm. Driving times are based on 6ish hour legs.
Arrive: the 12th just in time for st pattys! yeee!

What part of Chicago? If our near Lake in the Hills or Alogonquin area an open source tuner Andy does a lot of the area Subarus.

P&L does great work but you have to pay to play there. Depending on your current setup you may need winter tires. Star Specs do not play nice with snow and ice.

6StarMotorSports just opened up after a fiasco with the old shop owner from DS1 they are located in Schaumburg. Good group of knowledgeable people.

Also check out the Midwest section of NASIOC.

I'll try to think of some nice stops, I've done the drive way too many times. It can be beautiful during this time of year, but also can be somewhat troublesome if weather doesn't cooperate.

I've done this drive many times in a variety of vehicles from trucks, buses, RVs, trailers, sport cars, and SUVs. As always, WATCH THE WEATHER REPORTS. Get a CB and listen to the trucker chatter. I-80 will shut down with ZERO notice due to weather. Make sure you do all your preventive maintenance and bring cold weather clothes, water, and food in your vehicle. I've had to stay overnight in a vehicle many times due to the weather shutting down the highway. You won't get a hotel room since they will all be packed. you'll learn to savor that snickers bar you had stashed away.

I've made the drive in my previous car.

When you get to the Chi let's do a photo shoot.

If Minnesota has taught me anything, it's that having a decent shovel in your trunk can be a life saver. Even my subie still manages to get stuck every once in awhile, but usually I'm trying to.
