Italian Cars are very expensive to keep running - if he has never owned one and is not well off - get a benz or bmw.

all these Italian ladies have lots of quirks. Maintenance is not cheap and when something goes horribly wrong it can be quite expensive to fix. Get a full PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection) done from a reputable Maserati/Ferrari SD3 mechanic. They will check the motor, and all operations. The computer will check out the clutch wear, but its not always accurate on how much life is left. Usually the clutch will last around 30k miles, but ive seen members go wayy past that and others that fall extremely short. If you have the money, then who cares but if your pockets are tight then go with a Japanese or German luxury car.

Whatever you do, please don't go for an F1 Transmission.

2007 models are less quirky than the older ones, but yes Club411 nailed it on the head

its jerky, if you plan on running it in full auto mode, better to get the AUTO trans equipped models

which should be the 2007+ model years

My friend actually liked the f1 transmission when he drove the car.

Just talked to him, is it normal for dealerships to NOT allow someone interested in buying a car to take it to a 3rd party mechanic (who happens to be a friend of ours) to check out the car?

^^^ Eh? If they won't let you have a PPI done i'd pass on it.
