    Default Caught: 2010 Maserati Spyder

A convertible version of Maserati's GranTurismo coupe has been rumored to be in the works for years. But very little proof of the project was available, other than a rough mule that was once found — apparently abandoned — in the back of a wrecking yard. Well, we now have proof-positive that a drop-top version of the GranTurismo will come to fruition, thanks to these spy photos recently taken of a prototype Maser undergoing testing in Germany.

But unlike the most recent Maserati Spyder, which was built for the 2006 model year and sported a traditional canvas top, the extreme camouflage seen on the rear of the test mule pictured here indicates that Maserati's new Spyder might just follow the Ferrari California's lead and use a retractable hardtop; hence, the extremely ungainly cladding that extends from the windshield header all the way to the rear of the car — clearly, Maserati engineers are trying to hide any clues that might give away the true identity of the car's roof.

Regardless of whether it uses a canvas or a metal roof, we anticipate the GranTurismo Spyder will be available with both a 4.2-liter V-8 with 405 bhp and an S version with 433 bhp. Sources tell us the new Maserati Spyder will make its official debut in full production trim at the Frankfurt auto show this September, going on sale early next year as a 2010 model.
