    ^ Agreed.

Or just hack it together like the previous owner of my boat. I put in a new water pump impeller as part of my first winterization several years back and found chunks of an old impeller in the housing that were blocking about 80% of the water flow. I removed them and checked the lines to the vDrive unit and the transmission cooler, but they were clean. Ran the boat and the temp gauge wouldn't read anything. I was about to replace the gauge, but I figured I'd try a new thermostat first. Pulled the thermostat housing only to find that there was NO thermostat in there. So basically the previous owner regulated the temp by having a partially obstructed cooling system and no thermostat. The things you find in used boats.

I had a customer that had the impeller bits make it right up to the exhaust. blocked the exhaust, and the engine didnt overheat, but the exhaust got nice and hot, and melted the fiberglass mufflers and rubber hose... boat sank...

All this because of his habit of starting it on the trailer, to "make sure it will run in the ocean"...30 seconds of running =400+ revolutions on a dry impeller...

^ Guilty. I'll crank mine on the trailer for just a couple of seconds almost every time. Once it fires over on it's own I'm good to go and I haul it to the ramp. The impeller looks great every year when I replace it and I always keep the old one as a spare for emergencies. I'm guessing since there is 5' or so of water lines and the water strainer that it really doesn't get much wear in the first few seconds.

The only time I run it for any notable amount of time is when I'm winterizing and a new impeller will be going in before the next lake run anyway. Even after I drain everything it will push some more water out when I turn the engine over a bit. I usually crank it and choke it out (or blow huge amounts of white smoke) with Marvel Mystery Oil to keep the cylinders lubed over the winter.

Tip: Make sure you don't reverse your water lines when installing the pump (if they are the same color/diameter as they are most of the time make sure to mark one). Did it one time - such a kick in the ass if you have to pull the pump again for something that stupid, especially if the space is tight like it was with mine.
