Want to Get Seventy Eight Thousand Dollar Drunk?

Most of us would spend a good amount of money on a bottle of alcohol for special occasions: a good friend’s birthday, a couple’s 25th wedding anniversary, things of that nature. Would you, however, be willing to spend about $78,000 for a set of 34 bourbon bottles? Not likely.

But that’s exactly how much 34 Blade and Bow Bourbon Whisky sold for through an auction this December. The story behind the price tag isn’t one-of-a-kind. The contents of all 34 bottles come from a single barrel of a now-defunct Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which was co-owned by Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle.

In 1992, the distillery was shuttered but a year prior, the barrel was left to allow time to age it. The result is a liquor that has strong notes of cedar, leather and smoke with hints of vanilla, caramel and raisin.  To whomever purchased the bourbon- cheers, and, bottoms up!
