    Default Range Rover's 101

After reading through the majority of threads posted in the LR section, I've picked up on two common themes: 1) Any truck older than 3 years is a money pit and 2) New/er trucks have their benefits but, as with everything, it comes with a premium.

I'm sure owners have their horror stories and you'll find happy endings peppered throughout, but what about those potential owners who haven't decided if the RR is right for them. Maybe you're "frugal" and don't want to spend the $80k price tag for the latest and greatest. Well...here's a little educated advice for you; I'll be brief.

I've owned my 2000 HSE for a good little while now. It's been a good truck. Its also a headache and half!!! If you buy used, DO NOT buy without an extended warranty. If your warranty is about to run out, don't be cheap and extended or purchase an aftermarket warranty. Prior to it running out, get a full inspection of EVERYTHING. Pre-existing issues are not covered under aftermarket warranties, unless they are fixed. Let the dealer pay for it. If they don't, walk. If you don't, I guarantee you'll pay the same amount, if not more, in repairs.

If you find a deal that's too good to be true, it is. Run from it! If you're still feeling risky, make sure you have what you paid for it collecting interest in the bank because you WILL deplete it paying the repair shop. (I mentioned this point twice for a reason...listen!)

If you are a mechanically inclined DIY'r...this is your handyman special indeed. You'll be able to take it apart and put it back together is no time at all.

Maybe, you say, I have buyers remorse. Hell no! When the east coast got 3+ feet of snow last winter, this thing cut through it in short order. When others can't drive through water, I can. Downed tree...what downed tree? Its built for that type of stuff and I enjoyed every moment. But what's frustrating...a plastic fitting breaks from the coolant expansion line to the radiator; two inches long at best. NO FIX! Replace the radiator! $600 plus tax, and that's just this week.

Long and short, If you love to work on cars go for it! If you love to work on RR's and live in MD, PM me. I'll keep you busy. Unless you are a mechanic, don't buy a used RR. If you aren't and have plenty of time to enjoy the waiting room at the repair shop...buy used with a warranty. If you don't fit in either two categories, buy new. If you can't afford new, keep it moving.

I think that covers things. Anyone care to add?

I would never, ever buy an RR older than a 2010. If not for the major interior updates and engine upgrade to 510hp, I would not be driving my RRS today. In fact, I'd very likely be shuffling around in a Cayenne GTS or X6M.

There are much better manufactured rigs out there that'll do everything and more from a purely functional perspective. I had very few issues with the 60K miles I put on my V8 4Runner. Toyota quality is amazing. Peace of mind.

Now what's missing from all the marques I've mentioned above are history and brand cache. Porsche's a great drive, but it's just too much sport coupe or not rugged. They're all about the 911. The X6M is daring, yet faces the same challenge as the Cayenne. Its identity is just off target for my liking. Land Rover? The king of luxury SUVs.

The RRS Supercharged ticks off all the boxes for my needs. Versatile. Rugged looks. Cockpit like interior, just so. Uprated bits in the refresh that'll hopefully prove to be reliable in the long-run. The MPG is atrocious, but hey I knew this going into it.

I'm very much enjoying mine to date. If I weren't a bachelor and really needed a family hauler, I'd look towards the Denali or Sequoia and have a nice weekend 911 for therapy.

I have to agree with ROK I wouldnt touch anything before 2010...the interior for pre-2010 are just awfull especially for the money you spend for that vehicle.

Now here is my question....when they move the factory to India (2012-2013) will the quality of the RR's drop?

And if they do that means 2010+ build in the UK might not lose that much value

They've said multiple times, that the factory will not move out of the UK!

And the general consensus of the Range Rover community is, Everything after 2008 is OK!

My 2010 has been rock solid for over a year, if I had to buy a new SUV today, it would be the same. I had a 2006 RRS before for over 4 years, it too was flawless. It was my first RR, I wasnt even going to look at it because of the bad press, dont let that get in your way. They are not problem free, but no car is, I have had more problems with other marks in the past. No issues with the LCD thus far on the 2010 RRS for me.

No problem with center console LCD as well...by the way just in case the big RR is the one that has a LCD screen in speedometer area not RRS...

Thx - I am 2 hours from the closest LR dealer and truely know very little about them. I mean I know it has Jag engines, 6 sod etc but really never thought of buying one till a month ago. I was looking at a VW Trg TDI when. I thought about checking out a RRS. Then I thought why not go BIg and go with the RR!

instead of asking us about it, i highly advise you to go drive 'em all. i personally like the more intimate feeling of the RRS cabin and better proportions, but one can't argue that the RR full size is the flagship. if i had a family, i would've gone for the big dog. alas, i do not. so i stick to the sportier sport.
