Default Thinking of an RR or LR. . .are they still off-road vehicles?

L4P attracts a crowd that leans toward the urban SUV, but I'm learning to like the RR and LR4 and I'm considering a purchase. I know there are lots of LR/RR owners here and wonder if any of you take them off road at all. Now obviously, if I wanted to do hardcore off-roading, I'd buy and build out a purpose-built vehicle, but I'm wondering how the LR4 and RR do with Class 2-3 trails, camping trips, hunting trips, etc. How about safety- anyone wreck one?

"L4P attracts a crowd that leans toward the urban SUV" just b/c we are such nice folks....it actually began as 4x4 off road section! Just look at ANY of the threads that Coy, Me, Adam, Kep, Tim, Eric, Elias, John Z, Jim, Amit, etc...etc...We have almost ALL of the members of Southern California Land Rover (offroad associations) here in the 4 Family and a lot of Northern California Land Rover Members as well as a lot of Washington, Oregon, and a few scattered around from everwhere from Arkansas to international locations...How can we assist you??? We actually of two videos of LR's being rolled posted on this thread! I will look up a few links for your viewing pleasure....

Yep, trash it daily......and don't wash it........ I have been building "specific built" for 20 years, had just about every kind of 4x4 out there and if I haven't had one then I have wheeled with one. There is not another 4x4 made that can do what we use it for.

Ours is built specific for our needs and well loved (used)......

Also just FYI, if looking to buy. The RR-sport and LR3-4 are the exact same, just different body styling. They are the ones you want to be looking for (built on a truck frame, unlike the RR). Also there is a "Heavy Duty" package that is available (even some salesmen don't know about this)....It offers full electronic lockers as well as few other things. Very few come into the states with this package so maybe hard to find but worth every penny. With this you will have the ability to apply equal amounts of torque to all 4 wheels at an instant....................Now here is what you are paying for: the ability to change the torque at the transfer case as you need and send to the wheels you need while adjusting the shift points on the transmission.... This means you can have full horsepower and torque in mud with all 4 wheels spinning wide open or on snow and ice you can change to have the computer adjust the horsepower and torque if a particular wheel spins and move power to another wheel. You can also change it to start with more torque and no wheel slip-age at the beginning of a sand hill and then switch half way up with full horsepower and all wheels spinning wide open at full speed when you get to the top. You also have a full 4:1 gear for Rock Crawling while the diffs are fully locked and the transfer case is equally locked.

There's a lot wrong in the previous post.
There are no front lockers in any package. The transfer case ratio is NOT 4:1, they are closer to 3:1 I think it's 2.98:1 or something like that.
The LR3/4/sport are nowhere close to "exactly the same" at all. The LR4 is a new generation LR3(Discovery) that now has the Sport front suspension and the new 5 litre engine. Interior is much improved over the LR3. The Sport is not the same vehicle- the suspension is vastly different, especially in the SC version. They are not on "truck frames" but an integrated chassis/body with subframes. The overgeneralization of the functions of the Terrain Response are vague and for the most part incorrect as well.
I spent 4 hours Saturday off-road in the 2010 Sport. The main drawback of the Sport is the ground clearance isn't as great as the LR4 or full size Range Rover.

You really should contact Land Rover and let them know that Technical bulletin in the GTR for UK commercial vehicles which shows full specs, list parts, part number, and complete rebuild instructions for the “FRONT” electronic locker is not needed and should be removed. You should advise the dealers in UK that ship parts that they are shipping “pretend” parts, maybe I can get some money back.

You are correct! I do apologize…
The gear ratio is NOT 4:1, according to GTR your actual first gear is 4.17:1 thanks for clearing that up. Your Transfer case alone in low is 2.98:1 with a 1:1 in high and a final drive ratio of 3.73:1,

Seriously, somebody lied their ass off to get you to test drive one… however it is good to know that the front suspension parts I am running on my Discovery3 which are actually off of a RR-Sport don’t work, I have been driving on RR-sport lower control arms with LR3 upper control arms and also with 1 LR3 airbag and 1 RR-sport airbag for at least the last 10k miles. When the dealer pulls up part number they pull up the same numbers so you might mention that to Land Rover. Again the same part numbers for LR3 and LR4. And it is amazing that the same Ford shocks fit all RR-sports, LR3s and LR4s. As for them not being the “SAME” please when you call Land Rover tell them that they have been making a mistake for the last 6 years by using the same assembly line for both vehicles through the frame, driveline, motor and suspension phase., then after that please call Edmonds, who just wrote a nice article and actually broke down the suspension and showed it was the exact same.
They have used the exact same motors in LR3s and RR-sports until this new year, where they switched motors to a larger version, they did this on both LR4 and the RR-sport, again same assembly line. If it is LR3 or LR4 it goes through and if it is RR-sport it has a Supercharger placed on.

    Lets break this down:

“Land Rover calls its Integrated Body-frame construction, which consists of hydroformed-steel frame rails welded to the rigid monocoque body. In addition, rubber mounts and dampers are set between the body and frame”…..TruckTrend Magazine

“LR3 is a car-like unibody but mounted on a truck-style frame. Normally it's one or the other, unibody or frame, not both. A unibody is a way to achieve tight, precise, rattle-free construction. A separate frame is a way to preserve off-road ruggedness and high towing and hauling capacities”….USAtoday

So just to understand, they take a separate “Truck” frame and place a body on top, then weld the body to the frame. US-DOT registers it as a separate “Truck” frame and Insurance rates it as a separate “truck” frame. If you are in an accident and the frame gets bent, then a shop will (break) the welds and place in a frame straighten machine to repair then re-weld…..So Land Rover says it’s a “truck” frame and DOT says it’s a “truck”, USAtoday says it’s a ”truck” frame, TruckTrend Magazine says it’s a “truck” frame, and repair manuals say to repair it like a “truck” frame, but I’ll be sure to let them know you disagree…

Just having fun, don't take it all so personal, especially since you popped up just to post this.
