^yea i heard that, plus the fact that there is NO mounting standard to them, someone could bolt them on improperly and it actually wont even help you in an accident

DOT didn't pull anything. Racing harnesses do not have pretensioners as part of the passive restraint system (airbags, seat occupancy detectors etc...) therefore not DOT legal. Racing harnesses are safer if installed, worn and adjusted properly.

Emergency workers aren't searching for any buckles, they just cut the belt. I would recommend that everyone carry something like this anyway: TheFireStore.com: RES-Q-ME Personal rescue key chain size tool

Has nothing to do with safety, its all about legality.

Very nice Roy! The other problem, and reason why they are illegal, is due to the fact that many people install them improperly. When they aren't installed at the correct angle to the driver/passenger's back, if an accident occured, the spine could be compressed under impact leaving the person paralyzed.

    why? i have no idea

Schroth who manufactures the pictured harnesses offers a street legal harness that is DOT approved (US-DOT FMVSS 209). I'm pretty sure there is one or two other companies that offer them also. I will have to do some digging.
