On second thought. Go to that place a few times. If you aren't doing well I don't know what to say... but if you do get yourself a real track kart and hire a coach. It will be good for you.

No worries, I went through the same thing with basketball....
I had made up my mind I wanted to go to the NBA and I got physically in shape and worked on my talent daily, and then one day I just realized, I would much rather spend my time in a car then on the court. I didn't stop pursuing my NBA dream because of the rigor of the schedule. It just didn't seem to satisfy me like cars do. I still play basketball for school, YMCA, etc. But with racing I have had ALOT more fun and enjoyment than I ever did from basketball.....http://www.youtube.com/statjr (Please Subscribe)

Karting is a good place to start. If nothing else, you see if you have any talent whatsoever. However, karting is not the only place to cut your teeth. There are quite a few grass-roots racing series' where you could buy a low budget car and get started. First off, there is no such thing as "cheap" when it comes to racing, but there are less expensive cars and series' to race. Honda Challenge, Camaro-Mustang Challenge, Spec Miata, 944 Spec... and the list goes on.
Take a look at NASA pro racing National Auto Sport Association - nasaproracing.com Check out the forums section to see a list of all the series'.
Go to the track on a race weekend, see what's out there, talk to folks and see what interests you.
I, myself, have a '93 Camaro that's pretty much built for Camaro-Mustang Challenge... just don't have the time or the budget to go race.
It's a lot easier said than done, but not impossible or nobody would be doing it!
Best of luck to you!

Karting is def the way to start, if your good you will be seen and there are plenty of tournaments around the country to compete in. You will master your driving ability in karting. Drifting will not get you into road racing.

However, a few karters absolutely suck in cars. Mostly because of chassis roll and suspension, brakes, and other things that aren't really found in karts. So basically, don't think if you are an amazing karter you can go out and do anything. Get your basics down, then try a car out. That is after all what you want to be good at, not karting.

I don't think karts are necessarily the key to road racing. For one, they certainly aren't for big guys. I know a few guys that are on the larger side that will kick your ass all day long in a car on the track, but never did any karting. Put them in a kart and they're slow as hell for obvious reasons.
I also know guys that raced dirt bikes and became great road racers.
One thing is sure however, karting is not going to hurt your potential at all.
