The skippy cars still use Dodge neon motors with insane mileage on them, because they don't have enough money to put the more powerful mazda motors in. And the competition license they give you is a joke, it's really only good for showing your friends. And skip barber also claims the cars are equal, and sometimes it's evident that they are not at all.

Are you sure? I bought my SCCA Neon from an instructor there and I thought they were running Mazda motors. They give you an SCCA license which is enough to race club racing.
Edit: Checked the site and it just says "SOHC 2.0" not what make it's from, I guess it could be a Neon motor. hahaLast edited by Simon Tibbett; 07-30-2010 at 12:37 AM.

Facts are a beautiful thing. Thank you MMR.
It's amazing the actual knowledge of motorsport that people have outside of Ken Block or drift crap.
In all actuality, the simple answer to the poster's question is MONEY. There is NO substitute anymore. Those days are over. You're not even going to get money from performance anymore, it may increase the support you receive, but the money you receive to race with will have to come either from your own pockets or a very close network of "friends" that won't flake out on you (good luck with that).

+2 - racing is a rich man's game and as stated above the proficiency of the driver is sometimes (often) not the only thing that can get someone into a seat. It's a lot of politics and also a lot of money involved and sponsorship is not always easy to obtain, especially in today's economic conditions. Anyone seriously looking to get into professional racing as a driver should be prepared to "buy" their rides for at least a short while and maybe longer. The number of drivers who actually get paid to drive is relatively small.

it can be cheap, but you better know what you are doing. a lot of the teams at one of the tracks i go to, do all there own work. Hell, I am normally found in the pits lending a hand for free. But if you have to pay some one to do the work, it gets pricey

I've got a good buddy who actually WON the Indy 500. He said that he can't currently drive anything in the IRL even if he brought a suitcase full of money (which he can't). Dreams are awesome but the racing dream is becoming more of a fairytale now-a-days.
