I have always been interested in karts. How much does it cost to get something up and running and going to track days?

It really depends on what you get, and how far you are going to take it

Raced a shifter kart a few weeks ago, and fell in love!!! If one has a need for speed and adrenaline, then this is what they should drive...nothing like it! Plus, the cost is so much less than racing a car...geeezus the tires for the shifter run about $60 a piece...you can't beat that!
My bf just bought a used 125cc Shifter for $2500 plus the guy threw in all of his spare parts and equipment...But, of course with any hobby you can spend A LOT more than that, however you don't HAVE to...that's the nice thing

Yep. To an extent you can race a shifter cheaper than a car, competitively eh depends on the class, but other than the somewhat pricey investment of buying it upkeep and actually racing it is pocket change. Plus the speed and rush is great.
I now want to go buy another shifter for real. Damn.
