Thread: Is NASCAR Boring?

Jimmy Johnson is an athlete in nascar.
He would struggle miserably in an F1 car. F1 sees 5 negative g's deceleration at most circuits. The space shuttle launches at 5 g's, but thats a positive G. F1 cars braking at max 5 g's negative is the equivelent to trapping the wire on an aircraft carrier, corner by corner, lap by lap for an hour and a half. F1 cars also pull over 4 g's cornering. Even fighter pilots do not see sustained air combat/dog fights for an hour and a half! One more cool stat - an F1 car in high downforce configuration decelerates at 1 g negative, just by letting off the throttle (due to aero load). To put this into perspective, thats the equivelent of driving your 997S and doing a full ABS panic stop on dry pavement.
Nascar is a great employer for good techs/fabricators and nonathletic race car drivers.
For the people who hate on F1, you need to educate yourself more on the physics of what is going on, it is a truely brutal race series.

ChristianCoach, you nailed it. Nascar on road courses is exciting. I also like the brutal short tracks. I just can't get too excited about endless oval racing. As far as the other series you mentioned, we are on the same page. WRC, DTM, FIA GT, ALMS, Aussie V8 Supercars, F1, etc...

I've been a Nascar fan since I was about 5, and I'll be 30 next month. I grew up in the South but as a black kid I was the only one of my friends or family that gave a damn about Nascar, so I wasn't exactly predisposed to it. I've been to dozens of Nascar and Indy/Cart races and I've got to say that the Nascar races generally provide more fan action in person. Then again, last years Feb race @ Fontana was so boring I fell asleep in the grandstands. Sober. Point is- depending on the track and your level of understanding/attachment, any motorsport can be boring. Sure, Nascar technology is an oxymoron, but to say there's no strategy, skill or talent involved would be asinine. I'd rather walk the Indy pits at the LBC Grand Prix looking at the cars' headers, welds and remote shocks than watch them race. Shit just doesn't excite me...The cars are so fragile, you touch anything and your day is over. That is what makes Nascar EXCITING...you can bump and bang each other all day at 150-200mph and no matter what happens, it's "just one of them racin' deals". Just last week Carl Edwards saw an opportunity to avenge Brad Keselowski wrecking him earlier in the race and he admittedly turned into him and put Keselowski INTO THE FENCE ON HIS ROOF!!! That's boring? Come on!!! I can't wait to see what happens in the fish bowl at Bristol on Sunday.

Forward to about 2:40 and watch to the end!
Australian V8 Supercars - Somewhat comparable to nascar, only 1000% more exciting!
DTM anyone?
ALMS LMP1
There are a lot of series that have bumping and banging and are still waaay more exciting than nascar IMO.

I don't disagree with that...ALMS/Grand Am racing is the most thrilling competition out there for my dollar. What could be better than Vipers, Ford GTs and C6R Vettes battling with Porsches and Ferraris on a road course or even better, the streets of Long Beach?American by birth, Southern by the grace of God.

I love all types of racing series, F1, ALMS, DTM, INDY and yes Nascar. I do follow everyrace of the NEXTEL CUP. I had followed it years back, stopped watching but since JUAN PABLO MONTOYA (my all time favorite race car driver, Wish he could have satyed in F1 a little longer but understand his desicion)started in NASCAR I have followed it again and the Series has Improved tons. Double file restarts now with the 3 attemps at a Green white checker it really is very exciting to watch. Of all racing series the one that was in my opinion the best was the CART series before the division with Indy. Open wheel at it's best and it was very entertainig. CART going down open the doors to the MONSTER(in a good way) of NASCAR. I have been to a couple of races at the Auto club spedway and it's a great experience. There are many rivalries within the drivers and you can go back to the last race when Carl Edwards flipped Brad Keselowsky. I have to agree the presentation of the cars is not the best but the racing is. If they add more Road courses to the Serires it would be awesome. The races at Sonoma and Waltkinsglen have been great the past years. I do not wwacth the nationwide series and truck series, but the few races I have wacthed have been great, 4-5 contenders for the win on last laps. just my $0.2
