I'm in agreement with Tony. Which is why I'm glad Michael Ramies is being mentored in the UK. I'm pulling for the boy (sorry, a slight bit off-topic... until Mike makes it to F1).

And in F1 you really only have one shot. If you get into F1 unprepared like Bourdais for instance and not get the results the constructor is looking for, your career is pretty much done in F1.

And very few drivers can communicate what they feel into what the engineers can change for them. Every try to explain a simple issue to a propeller head IT guy?
That fact has set many drivers apart. If you read Steve Matchet's Life in the Fast Lane, he talks about Shui's ability to communicate exactly what he needed to the Benetton team to be the fastest on the track without the fastest car.
The era of engineer drivers is long gone. Another great read it the Unfair Advantage by Mark Donahue.
