Easiest way is something like WDTV or Roku box
I use WDTV and I have 2 external 2TB hooked up with all 720P movies/tv shows and some bluray rips all mkv format and it plays it without a problem, it even does subtitles if you just have the subtitle file along with the video file separate
It does avi, mkv, flv, mpg, mpeg, and a ton of other formats as well as pictures and music
If you have any questions about it or where to get the wdtv you can pm me

Nvidia ION works too. Lots of choices.

Roku, is now expanding, when I first got the box there had almost nothing but the amazon, then came, netflix, cnet, wealthtv and is growing by the minute.
Just go Mclaren and win the race!
