J08M3 knows what he is talking about. Read, then RE READ his advice.
Its all a matter of what you are trying to achieve.
If you want true home automation - you have to pay to play
If you want to impress your friends that know nothing about home automation and you want to look cool when you press the touchscreen to have your lights turn on and off, then there are plenty of cheap products or HIGH END remote control units (however you want to look at it) that can accomplish this.

I thought that Control 4 had come a long way and did a ton. I previewed their stuff at Magnolia and Paradyme and it seems to do everything that I want. HT (basically selecting DVD, the right mode on the receiver, etc when I hit "movie"), iPad remote, controls lighting, HVAC and security. I'm looking at finishing my HT in my family room and getting Control 4 to do all that.

I had 4k last year and i build myself a pretty good set up. set 1 buy a really good proyector for 2,500 - 3,500 then another 500 -1,500 on a screen. and 1,000- 2,500 surround sound. (I presume u have a computer) buy a PS3 and download on your computer a software called PS3 media server. connect both by cable if possible to the network. This setup will let you stream content on your computer to your PS3 and if they are connected by cable you can stream blu-rays. So its very comfortable because everything you download on your hard drive you can watch it, regardless the format, it will automatically convert it LIVE.
hope it help, anything else you want to know, just ask.
Excuse my english grammar its a bit rubbish.

or buy an Ipad and an apple TV and an app called air video. Download a piece of software to your computer from the company that does the app. This will also let you stream anything from your hard drive to your Ipad. and now with the new feature on the ipad you can then stream this content to you apple TV. This is also pretty cool, im looking on doing it. But I just need the money...

Yea if you want to be stuck with proprietary apple codecs which suck and fail in quality.
East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
