    Default Oppo BDP-83 Bluray Player

    Hi,
Anyone here using the Oppo BDP-83 bluray player? I've been using the DV-981 DVD player for a few years now and have been really impressed but I am wondering if it is worth moving into their Bluray player considering it is so much more than other consumer level bluray players on the market.

    Thoughts?

I was also a big fan of the Oppo for regular DVD's.
When I upgraded to Blu Ray I went with the PS3. We have it for our screening rooms and when discussions of what Blu Ray to get come up, everyone always recommends the PS3.

I've never understood why people spent so much money on DVD players ( 100usd+ ), I had better luck with cheaper DVD players. I'm almost positive it holds true for bluray.

Lets hope that is the case...

I never wanted to upgrade since I never watch many movies anyways.. However, I decided to sign up for netflix because there were so many movies I wanted to see. Decided that a bluray is NEEEEEEDED!

Ended up with the Magnavox that was on sale at walmart on black friday for 78$! It was a gift, but I had suggested that one anyways since it was cheap. You wouldnt catch me in line at 3am for a damn DVD player..

Considering I have over 6 grand invested in just the audio side of my home theater system I don't think a $78 Magnavox is going to produce the results I am looking for. No offense.

So no one is using the Oppo?

Your entitled to your opinion and I'll just drop it there.

    CNET's review

The good: Universal disc player capable of handling Blu-ray, DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio and CD; outstanding image quality on Blu-rays and DVDs; best-in-class operational speed and stability; 7.1 analog outputs; feels built to last; onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding; Profile 2.0-compliant; 1GB onboard memory; backlit remote; two USB ports; HDMI cable included.

The bad: Expensive; competing players offer comparable performance on vast majority of Blu-ray movies; no Wi-Fi for BD-Live features; lacks streaming media services like Netflix and Pandora.

The bottom line: The Oppo BDP-83 is an outstanding universal disc player with excellent performance on Blu-rays and DVDs and lightning-fast operational speed, but most home theater fans will balk at the high price.

It was rated the highest out of all their BD players

According to CNET, the PS3 is the benchmark for Blu Ray players, and due to the PS3's GPUs and pricetag, there will never be a better player.

None taken and you are absolutely right..

If I had anything invested in my home theatre system, I would want an upgraded unit. With that much invested, there is no way I would risk sacrificing the quality of the entire system because of one component.

I had the opportunity to demo the Oppo Blu-ray at a Hi-Fi store and I was blown away. Image quality in HD and SD media is breathtaking. The sound quality was also fantastic. I am more of an audio guy so being able to also play back SACD, DVD-A, CD, HDCD, etc. is great for me.

I went ahead and ordered one and it comes today. I'll let you all know what I think after it is up and running.

Oh my god this thing is bad ass. It's running at 1080p 24hz and the 3:2 pulldown is amazing. Add that to the 36 bit color depth and the picture is phenomenal. I have watched Disney's Special Edition of "UP" and the "5th Element" and I am just amazed. I have the new Transformers and Moon at home for the weekend. Looking forward to watching movies again. It is like getting a whole new TV. I bought my top of the line Samsung LCD 2 years ago and it has never looked so good.

Next step is to see how the SD DVDs look and then decided to sell my old Oppo DV-981
