I have a windows 7 machine right now with media center on it. Would it be better to go with xbmc or plex?

Mine is running from a VGA cable lol. If you had a HDMI that would be great also. I have too many HDMI devices not enough inputs (need a switcher lol). I will use my EVO and take a video like the original poster did some time this upcoming week.

    What would YOU recommend?
I'm taking a class in college for A+ cert. (fixing and building computers) and one of the assignments is to build a computer. I chose an HTPC just to not be the norm, and because I'm interested. I've been learning a lot and may soon decide to build on myself.
So, i would recommend Boxee (Useful link Which Media Center Is Right for You) and go with ubuntu or some form of linux even though i have win7.

If you are just looking for a connection from a htpc to a tv and arent connecting to a cable box or the like, choose a video card with a DVI port or hdmi. If your video card doesn't have an hdmi connector like a most, i believe you can get an adapter.

Personally i find mediaportal easy as hell to setup, it does require some tweaking to get things working perfectly but I'm fine with that.

xbmc setup seemed somewhat difficult as my movies would never show up in my library, weird. Eventually I just said to hell with it.

Boxee is great I just don't like the fact that i need an account to login.

plugins, yes/no. Only real plugin i use is called Moving Pictures which basically organizes my movies for me. There are tons more out there but I don't see a need for them.

Codecs, yes. However CCCP should give you everything you need to get started really (ffdshow, haali, ect) and its easy as hell to install.

I'm in the middle of moving and I will be re-doing my entire htpc setup to accommodate a TV/Movie server and multiple clients, will keep you guys posted
