FILMING; The Briefing
HI All;
As you know, we're filming the event. We're doing a DVD series, each DVD being based on 1 day's activities.
If YOU have a camera, here's what you need to know:
1) Don't let the camera run for hours on end. Capture footage looking out different angles of your car, for no more than 1 minute at a time.
2) Try and capture footage of the interaction between you and your passengers.
3) If you DO get pulled over, discreetly film the stop.
4) If you can, go to Filmtools: Hollywood's source for grip, electrical, lighting, sound, video and film supplies and get yourself a suction cup car mount or two. They can be mounted on cars up to 150mph...tested and proved. Don't wet the suction cup and check the mounting every 30 minutes or so.
5) When in doubt, film from low angles, or with the camera resting on a wall, on the floor, whatever. hand held footage is garbage, so try not to do that.
HIGH DEFINITION
If you're shooting with an HD camera, you can shoot anything from any angle and it will look good.
If you're shooting STANDARD DEFINITION, focus on your gauges, foot pedal action, rear view mirror action and other small detail shots. That's because I would use these shots only as picture in picture shots as they're too small to use full screen.
SOUND
As soon as the camera is hung out the window, the sound ins garbage. try and keep the camera inside the car as others fly by, or just realize that those shots that DO have the camera hanging out of the car mean that I'll have to ditch the sound. You can always buy a plug in microphone.
ON CAR MOUNTS
If you DO mount your camera outside, and you intend to face the camera forward...BEWARE. The lens WILL be destroyed in minutes. Buy a camera that will accommodate a screw on lens filter (about $17 for the filter) and bring extras. That way, the filter gets damaged and your camera remains perfect.
I will give a final briefing at the event.
CAMERA CAR
Our camera car is a Blue Audi RS4...we will have SIX in car/on car camera mounts. Our supplemental camera car is a 350Z which will join us around Paso Robles.
When you see our car(s), we prefer you pull along side slowly...we'll be in the fast lane...stay one car behind us on our right and slowly overtake us. We'll have cameras rolling. if you feel compelled to pass us at speed, no guarantees we'll capture anything but a second or two of footage.
Be sure to give us the four finger salute, smile pretty for the camera and show off your Gold Tooth Rapper's Grill work (if you have it).
