Gears are different. Most vehicles only have one reverse gear compared to 4,5 or 6 forward gears. So which ever car has a lower reverse gear can go faster.
With gears they are labeled as for example as 3.00 or 2.5. This means that for every 2.5 rotations of the crank shaft(in the engine) the transmission's output shaft rotates once.

I think you meant higher reverse gear.

In a video released later they revealed that the Toyota had a CVT transmission. Since a CVT does not have any gears and runs on a chain, the Toyota was consistently accelerating while the Ferrari hit the top end of its gearing. Theoretically the Toyota can go as fast forwards as it can backwards.
