Thread: Learning about fashion

I want to become more into fashion but I just cant seem to get the hang of it. I see kids at my school that have great style. How do I become better at fashion? I cant seem to find much stuff on mens fashion besides for GQ, which I read. I have learned a little from it but not as much as I would like. How do I become better at it?

How do I know what colors and patterns to match with each other?

I guess so. Maybe I should watch Bruno a couple times and see if that does anything.

Style depends on your personal preferences obviously. Are your goals being more fashionable for yourself or is it creating a brand? If it's a brand, you want to be into the popular trends right now like flannel it seems like (me no like at all) which are usually found in magazines. Even better though is creating a new trend with your own style to it. As for yourself, look at brands and clothing you like or maybe if you see someone else wearing something you like just search it on the internet or for stuff in stores. I myself am super picky about clothes where I'll look at literally 100 shirts and pick one or two and try on 20 pairs of jeans to buy one pair. For me it's all about good fitment and looking clean. No baggy, super tight, or bright colors. Simple = good (at least for me). I'm also partially color blind so mixing a bunch of colors together could be a catastrophe haha. But look for stuff you like, try on a ton of stuff till you find what you want, and pick brands you like. For me I can't stand having something someone else has so I usually go to the internet where people are less likely to have the same thing as me when going out plus it's usually the newest stuff. I'm into the fashion stuff so hope this helps haha.

Well my first question is what type of fashion are you into? This may seem like a pretty open question, but there are really quite a few styles you could choose from. Once you answer that question there are a few different routes you can take for inspiration. GQ is a great magazine, but usually it is directed towards high fashion and business wear. Go to a Barnes and Noble and look through any magazine you can find in the men's section. I personally look at Complex, GQ, Esquire, Details, and a variety of others. Each will have its own trends based on the creative director of the magazine.

The next step you can take is go online and start looking at blogs. Style is very specific to region, so if you see a look you like start taking inspiration from that region.

The third step is the direct approach, go to your local mall and check out different stores! Men's clothing has a much smaller market at most malls so you will need to search out for the best places. I myself work at a men's apparel store where we focus on the Contemporary style, with a touch of street wear. We pay attention to not only the trends around the world, but also what our customers are asking for. Fashion is always changing and you have to be ready to cough up some good money for pieces that no one else has. In the end it is all about feeling comfortable in what you wear. If you aren't comfortable you will stick out like a sore thumb.

I have always liked fashion and since I was little I have been concerned with how I look to others. I just didnt start getting into it until about 7-8 months ago. Now I am trying to learn as much as I can. Sometimes I go to macys just to look around. I went there yesterday and picked up a green ralph lauren half zip sweater and a pair of white tommy hilfiger chinos. I have noticed that I am a little more confident when I go there now compared to when I first started. I am still not the best at matching colors and patterns. Also not good at what matching types of clothing with each other. So pretty much I am just not good at style still. At times I wish I had a gay friend or a girlfriend that likes to shop.

I am into preppy looks, along with modern sophisticated looks. European looks too. Also at times I like urban skater streetwear that some of todays rappers are pulling off. Like supreme clothing and diamond supply co.

I currently read GQ and Details every month and when I am bored I just browse around clothing sites looking at stuff I like. I also people watch in public sometimes. Not creeper style but If I like something I see, I might study the look a little more.

I'm the least fashion guy on the 4 but what I get from others is, that my style is the shizz because it suits me.

I dress according to those specs:

- try to avoid "up to date fashion" mostely because of me not being a main steam guy as well as just 4 the principle.
- Look at what looks good to me, buy what feels good to wear and looks good on me while doing so.
- I would try to buy reasonable priced but living in Frankfurt makes even the attemt ridiculous.
- No slim fit shit or anything pink.

I do not keep up with fashion. well, my accessories I do but clothes?, no. It boils down to your taste, what makes you comfortable, yada yada yada. My favorite brand is Fendi. LOVE their scarfs, wallets, shoes, ect. I am just a t-shirt, gym shorts kinda guy honestly. I always wear a jacket too. It is grey with no names or design on it really. So simple but my Fendi stuff is wild colors and designs. Love Lagerfeld's designs

Keep an eye out for what you see on people and take note of the textures, color combos, and pairings of pants and shirts.
If you're a guy, this is far easier for you to keep up appearances. A well dressed "money smart" person even with pedestrian brands goes far more than an immaculately clothed branded but poorly executed individual.
Basic clothing stores will have whatever is in fashion up front and center - I keep an eye for that but only jump on things on sale.
And I almost never keep up with with whatever is in the magazines - why try.
