Thread: Going Straight...My Razor That Is.....

I have been getting into the shaving fetish for the last year, using a safety razor and mug and brush. Starting sniffing around the internet and discovered the Straight Razor Place, a forum devoted to all things straight razor. Just ordered a Dovo straight and strop from Straight Razor Designs, The Finest In Gentlemens Shaving And Grooming Needs. I really enjoy the time I spend on my face in the morning. It is as close to meditation as I go. I will post up some pictures if anyone is interested once i get the hang of it. Here's a good video of the mad skills I hope to achieve.

any updates on this? I just picked up a safety razor and some other items from "the art of shaving" i had my first shave last night, and am already hooked. It truly is an art.

I've been shaving with a double edge "safety" for almost a year and I will never go back to those 20 blade machetes people call razors! Invest in a good brush and a quality pack of blades and you will be set!

i have a badger brush and just ordered a sample packs of blades. I'm having a hard time properly getting under my jaw line - the current murker blade keeps jumping and thereby hacking my skin. In time and with hopefully a different blade that will be reduced and or eliminated

I do enjoy the ritual of shaving now though - i have even been taking some time out in the evening to take my time and attempt to learn the skill properly

Yes it does take some time and practice. One of the most important things to take note of is the way your hair grows in. You can avoid razor burn and get a very close shave once you know this. good luck!

My barber got me into the whole straight shave thing because I was so fascinated by it. He gave me tips and a razor to borrow and the next day I came back with at least ten cuts not just nicks on my face lol. While in Washington D.C. this summer on business I stopped in their mall and stumbled upon The Art of Shaving store and walked out with a Dovo Shavette and as many sample packs of shaving cream the guy would give me.

The whole experience is amazing, I love the fact that something so simple can be so complex while being a challenge.

Every man should at least try learning how to straight shave

I recently picked up this Japanese straight razor. I have not mastered it yet but it will make hella weapon if someone busts into my powder room.

ive been burning through my blade sampler pack that i purchased - a total of 6 different blade types...... its amazing how different blades treat your face. This morning a tried a new Treet blade that was "carbon steel" and it was a horrible experience. It not only did not provide a close shave after three passes, it left my skin irritated and almost a "dry skin" feeling. Tomorrow may bring a new blade.

To those that have jumped to straight razors, where and how did you begin? I fear slicing my face up, I'm thinking about stopping at a local barber to get the guidance of a professional.

^go to a barber and do some research online. The art of shaving company is a great place for this though it is a little expensive. You'll want to get a straight razor that you can change the blades out of I have the Dovo Shavette but started out with a dollar store straight razor for a while. I have found that the smaller blades are best for a beginner. Good luck

Gents, hows it going. For those using a straight razor how long will the edge last before it needs sharpening? How are you guys having your blade sharpened? I figure I blow 20 bucks a month on Gillette blades and they will be trashed quickly. I don't mind paying good money for a quality straight razor, I have to shave daily for my job. This has interested me for a while, I just don't know anything about it.
