As human beings, we’re constantly learning, questioning and gaining new knowledge of the things that we’re passionate about. For me, and no doubt you as well if you’re reading these words, that means every day I’m excited to learn more about car culture. Just over a week ago, Paddy and myself flew to Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, to go Speedhunting. To be honest I didn’t know what to expect… and I’m still trying to take it all in. Rod had set up a feature with the beautifully aggressive Volkswagen Caddy that you see here, but the rest of the three day adventure was yet to be confirmed. In fact, Rod might well have mentioned what else was on the agenda, but as soon as I saw a photo of this 1JZ-powered VW on my phone, I lost track of everything else that was happening.

Was I excited? Damn straight. Seeing a car build like this and not knowing anything about how it came about is pretty exciting from a storytelling point of view. I had so many questions: was it a no-limit, chequebook-out type of build? A big money demo car? Who owned this absolute weapon and what were their plans for it? But allow me to explain the answers to those questions in just a moment whilst I take a brief trip back in time.

Y’see, there’s something very special about this Caddy. It reminds me of the mental cars that used to find their way onto magazine covers here in the UK back at the turn of the millenium. In the late ’90s and early ’00s two car builders stick firmly in my mind for pushing the boundaries of what was possible. Ian Birch of Dubsport fame was one of these guys; he put together many rear-engine conversions and a handful of twin-engine powered cars (all of the VW variety) that graced the covers of many automotive magazines. Another name you might remember, if you were into the turbocharged Ford scene, is Squint of MJS Performance and his positively bananas rear-engined Ford Escort and even more insane twin-engined RS Turbo pick-up truck. These builds were the ultimate pinnacle of insanity, albeit it of a good kind.

But then much of this awesome shoehorning of big power motors into places they didn’t really belong seemed to kind of stop in the UK. Sure, it still happened. But in the VW community there was a shift toward factory-look motors with big power or very clean engine swaps that looked awesome, but didn’t really gain any sort of high score bonus for mentalism.

And that’s why I think this 1JZ-powered Volkswagen Caddy truck, which has been lovingly built by its inspirational owner, Viktor Martensson, is so very special. Not only does it bring together a crazy engine swap and elements of different car cultures but he and his friends at the Japcrap Bombsquad are all about having fun with their bonkers automotive creations. Viktor and his friends embody everything I love about the automotive scene. This guy started out as a humble metal worker in Stockholm, and with the help of the Japcrap Bombsquad, has put together a vehicle that he is able to have stacks of fun with.

I’m fascinated by the pure insanity of the build. Simply down to the fact that it breaks all of the rules. This Caddy is a perfect Euro/JDM mash-up and Viktor has also managed to combine many elements of various scenes to create a car that everyone seems to be talking about. It’s all-encompassing. This vehicle represents the Euro, drift, JDM and stance movement all in one hit. It’s a German car that’s been created by a clever Swedish guy using Japanese power. With this in mind it could be some sort of United Nations car culture project!

From the outside it may look like just a pretty bonkers Volkswagen Caddy with a side-exit exhaust. But actually, there’s a whole other complete car involved in the build, as well a load of fabrication work. Rather than just fit the engine from a Soarer, Viktor completely re-engineered the whole body. The front end is pretty much all Soarer with the Caddy panels cleverly disguising the happenings from this dead-side shot. The rear sub-frame is all Soarer too. Rod put it better than I could on the shoot when he said, “There’s a ghost of a Soarer living inside that Caddy.”

Maybe that ghost is why the front of the Caddy almost has a personality; a kind of mad, one-eyed face that shouts, “I’m gonna physically harm you if you don’t get out of my way!” And Viktor’s not afraid to push his latest creation as these awesome photos taken by Paddy at the incredible Gröndal Eskilstuna Motorsport Arena show.

In fact, I found it pretty hard to believe that this was only the second outing for the car and the first time it had been used to its full potential in its current guise. Viktor has recently made some changes to make the Caddy more track compliant. The external wastegate used to sing its battle cry via a wild screamer pipe that looked similar to the handbrake and gear shifters used inside the car. This screamer pipe exited straight up out of the engine bay and looked crazy, but also sounded pretty violent, too. Violent in a good way, that is… unless, of course, you’re a racetrack scrutineer with a dB meter. With noise reduction being the name of the game, Viktor has re-engineered his Caddy’s turbo’s wastegate system. Despite this though, the motor still sounds very tough indeed.

It’s a deliciously smooth straight-six sound that the 1JZ turbo lump serves up. A sound that is completely unexpected. It’s not something you associate with a VW and certainly not a little Caddy truck. The smooth engine note is complemented by the equally slick rolling stock which this vehicle sits on. The OZ Racing Futura is one of my all-time favourite wheels and Viktor is running some super-wide 17×10-inch items out back…

… with a pair of 17×8.5-inch versions up front. At the moment the vehicle is still being developed, so this set-up could change but the stance of the vehicle is pretty much right on the money if you’re a fan of aggressive wheel fitment. Personally, I love the look. The timeless design might make me slightly biased, but I can think of no better wheel set-up; the Futuras add a classic blend of style to this nutty build.

The dash installation, wiring and cool little touches inside the Caddy are all Viktor’s own handiwork and an expression of his personality. I for one really like it when people inject some of their personality into a build rather than simply installing ‘must have’ parts in an effort to tick boxes.

Hi everyone, I've always dreamed of being able to relate to you guys or be able to post my beautiful ride here and be proud. However, being 17, I knew there was no way I'd be relating to the Ferrari or Lamborghini guys :P I realized I had to search for a sleeper, and I found this beautiful car. I'm am a proud new owner of this supercar. I'm the fifth owner; the second owner picked it up from Ontario, with it being the perfect car, sunk ~$20k into it and then sold it and bought a new 911 GT3 RS at the time - so money wasn't too big of a concern, apparently. The next guy picked it up and sold it because it had some starting issues, which was just one sensor that needed replacing due to the high performance ignition system. The next owner bought it, didn't even register it, and stored it for the winter and had to sell it to me because of financial issues. Like I said, I just bought this car a few weeks ago, but I'm just going to paste what the previous owner has said about it and add some details...

My last car was a 1996 850GLT with 170 hp, which I fell in love with, so I was heartbroken when the main bearing exploded out the bottom and the engine lit on fire. Of course, I took the insurance money plus some other money I was planning on using for a new car and I found this one and fell in love again, especially with close to 300 extra horses. I was smitten with this car, it's my dream car.

This is a highly modified 1996 Volvo 850 T5-R with 440hp and 480lb/ft at 22psi(Yes, it is proven with dyno sheets). Before I give some detail on the mods, this car stock is very rare, let alone the platinum edition which only 1500 were sent to America. This car has 198000kms, but this is really irrelevant as practically everything is aftermarket with exception of the block (Guess who needs a new block? :P) so to speak.

The modifications done on this car are extensive, and I will touch upon the most relevant. The vehicle has Turbosmart turbo controller, so you can run 13 (~280hp), 16(~320hp), 18(~380hp), or 22 pounds (440hp, 480lb/ft) of boost with the press of a button. This flexibility in terms of power output is awesome. In my possession, I have been beaten by nothing on the road. This truly is my dream car, and this thing is insane.

Power/engine mods:
-M66 manual 5spd swap
-Garrett T3 Stage 3 T4, 54mm
-custom cold air intake
-Race Tech Lab inlet manifold (extremely rare)
-Volvo R exhaust manifold
-custom stainless steel turbo back exhaust, Magnaflow muffler and heat wrapped
-Crane HI6 High Intensity Ignition System
-Fivo 550cc injectors
-Walbro fuel pump
-Upgraded coil pack and ignition wiring
-Upgraded sparks
-Turbosmart BOV
-front mount intercooler
-reverse intercooler piping (heat insulated)
-all silicone hoses/pipes

Handling:
-Koni FSD and Eibach springs
-330mm Eurosport Tuning drilled and slotted rotors
-Porsche calipers (4 piston, aluminum)
-custom stainless steel brake lines
-IPD front and rear sway bars
-front strut brace
-TKI Motorsport adjustable endlinks

Interior:
-AEM fuel/air ratio gauge
-Turbosmart Turbo Controller
-analog boost gauge
-full carbon fiber dash (Yes, it's real carbon fiber)
-Volvo S60 R front seats
-Volvo v70 rear seats
-custom suede roof lining
-Kenwood double din DNX8120 (Bluetooth, nav, rear cam)
-Nardi steering wheel
-Volvo R door inserts
-Subwoofer and amp

Exterior:
-Amazing shape, body and paint (Pearl white paintjob is from November 2011)
-Tint all around
-Eurosport Tuning Projector Headlights
-Eurosport Tuning Black Mesh Grille
-Clear side markers
-HIDs headlights and fogs
-De-badged
-Hankook high performance summer tires (new)
-These really light, five spoke "sport" rims or something...

This car is RIDICULOUSLY fast. In my few weeks of owning it I've taken a current generation M3, a last generation Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, and a new Jaguar XJL Supercharged. The look on peoples' faces when they see this car keeping up to or beating them is just priceless. This car came with a two inch thick stack of receipts for parts, although much of the work was done by the 2nd owner. Here, take a look at some pictures of this beauty ;P
The other day, the day before it was booked in to have the PCV System replaced, I was at about 4500rpm and it felt like I was hitting a rev limiter, so I backed off and took it easy the whole way home. I noticed, at a light, that it had started ticking quite noticeably like my last one had before it exploded. I took it to Calgary Autoworks and they gave me a quote of $7500 for an engine overhaul and rebuild. What had happened is that some oil had splashed up into the intake manifold, preignited, and bent either some rod or the main bearing. I've asked Tunerworks, but they're too scared to take on a project such as this. If anyone knows somewhere I can trust and go to in Calgary who would do a good job on this, it would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm 17 and graduating this june, and this is my absolute DREAM car and it would be great to have a car this summer.

Guys,

This is my first thread but I have been around for quite some time on other car forums.

I am looking for advice on what is the best bang for buck high end performance car with 4 seats on the market to buy now.

The 3 main criteria to be considered are as follows:
1) Looks
2) Performance
3) Current Price on a Nice Used Low Mileage Car and Expected Depreciation in the next 2 to 3 years (Based in London England)

To help give some perspective I have previously driven (some pics attached):
- F430 Ferrari (Amazing and if I didn't need 4 seats the 458 would be the no brainer option). I don't like the California
- Bentley GT (modified with exhaust, tune, amazing morel hi-fi, wheels and bodykit)

I have narrowed it down to the following cars and could really use some advice:

DBS low mileage
- MSRP £165,000... An 09 with 15k miles can be had for £85k. My concern is that the DB9 has dropped like a stone and can be had now for £30k. Should it hold due to limited production or will it follow the suit of DB9?
- Not the Best Performer but it sure looks good
- Although an old model, I prefer its looks to the new Vanquish.

2011 Bentley GT
- MSRP £135,000... Can be had for £85k with about 7,000 miles
- Car has the best finishing imaginable and looks good. It has power also... It like the previous GT is a boat and weighs a million pounds... lol
- New Shape and looks and feels brand new
- Doesn't perform as well as I would like but it is just so comfortable and luxurious
- As I just stopped driving a GT, I would prefer something a bit different, unless this is by far the best option.
- A bit old man.... unless lowered on wheels

997.2 Turbo PDK
- MSRP Approx £120,000.... Can be had for £65k (2009 model) or £75k for a 2011 Turbo S
- Performs better than all others listed
- Doesn't stand out and isn't that exiting
- Old model

Panamera Turbo PDK
- MSRP £110,000... Can be had for £65k. Probably quite a bit further to drop.
- It performs better than the M6 Gran Coupe but has an ugly ass
- Nice interior, but 3rd to the Bentley and M6
- A Bit Old Man
- 4wd is a benefit in London where it always rains.

M6 Gran Coupe
- Although a brand new car, BMW UK offer 0% finance and a guaranteed buyback after two years which makes this car an attractive option.
- About £110k... £7k down and £1,100 a month for 36 months
- 2nd Best interior of the Bunch

Your advice and opinions are much appreciated.

Thanks,
Farris

So, as I was searching for twin turbo Lambo's on the interwebs, I come across a listing for a complete UGR TT kit! The auction is a no reserve listing so potentially this could be a deal if it is, in fact, a real UGR kit. I figured someone here (UGR crew) would know the skinny on it...some of the parts in the pictures posted on the ad seem a little questionable though.

I have seen Titan/Heffner kits for sale, but NEVER a UGR kit...anyway here is the link and the item number is 140971432309:
