De Bethune DB24 Power Sport

One look at the De Bethune DB 24 and it's immediately obvious that this is far from just another watch. Most striking is the precision-machined look of the dial and bezel. The blued titanium outer bezel and titanium case form a perfect contrast with the three-dimensional De Bethune 'microlight' titanium dial. The blued titanium and steel hands are huge when compared to most any other watch and, although they excel in adding to the aesthetic weight of the DB 24, also serve well in conveying the time. The case itself is made up of three parts, all titanium, and attached with titanium bolts that seal the case submarine-hatch style. By the way, De Bethune rates the DB 24 to 500m. As a dive watch, it's missing many things, but it's nice to know that any unexpected immersion, however deep, won't do this masterpiece any harm. Anti-reflective sapphire crystals front and back allow a glare free display of the time and offer a window into the inner-workings of the in-house movement.

The DB 24 is powered by 'Self Winding Big Power', the De Bethune tag for the DB22 Power movement that's assembled by hand and uses 53-jewels. Operationally, most significant is a patented device that allows the owner to adjust the self-winding rate (essentially the rotor speed) to 'sport', 'normal', or 'slow' modes. This function is activated by the crown and indicated by a hand on a lever visible on the movements reverse. Switch into the 'sport' mode before you hit the links and the increase in the amount of inertia required to move the rotor will insure that even your most aggressive swings won't result in any damage to your watch.

Somewhat less obvious, but no less interesting, is the De Bethune "pare-chute" system that promises Triple Shock Proofing. This 'system' is a combination of a silicon and platinum balance wheel (an industry first), and a silicon balance spring held in place by a titanium bridge. As a nice extra touch, the blued titanium contrasts and design elements present on the dial are carried over to the movement aesthetic.

De Bethune will certainly be at the forefront of watch design for the foreseeable future and the De Bethune DB 24 is an important example of the creative latitude and cutting edge technology exhibited by the brand. Much more importantly, we've finally found a watch that looks great on your wrist and doesn't need to be relegated to the car console or locker when you're out on the golf course!
- Built from machined aluminum and stainless steel, this custom 6" flared pedestal is as functional as it is stylish
- Once alerted, the safe continually relays tracking information allowing the owner and authorities to pinpoint the safes exact position.
- The GPS tracking software allows the safe to be tracked on a map anywhere in the world through any internet enabled cell phone or computer.

Multi-Sensor Alarm
- Panic Button – Use this feature to send a silent alert to security personnel.
- Bolt Lock Indicator – This sensor provides verification that the safe door is not only closed, but locked as well. The automation system can report when the door has been unlocked for an extended time. The alarm or home automation system can then use this information in a variety of ways. For example, the home automation system can notify the owner any time the safe is accessed, or raise an alert if the safe is opened while the owner is away from home.

Now for the good stuff :)

Official Game Of Thrones ‘The Night’s Watch,’ Wrist Watch

Image: http://www.ablogtowatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Game-of-Thrones-The-Nights-Watch-ulysse-nardin.jpg

Thanks to watch maker Ulysse...

Thanks to watch maker Ulysse Nardin, The Night's Watch now has a watch. Teaming up with HBO, Ulysse Nardin has produced a limited edition version of their Marine Diver for the Game of Thrones. The pre-mechanical fantasy medieval world now brought to life in the popular cable television show, now has a timepiece all its own. Just don't expect to see the piece on the wrist of Jon Snow or other members of the celibate order of honorable men and prisoners who man "the wall."

As an eager "watch spotter" when it comes to timepieces worn by characters in television shows that I like, I was resolved to the fact that there would be no timepiece identification opportunities in The Game of Thrones. Series author George R. R. Martin is probably more of a suspenders aficionado, but I bet he would like this. Actually, the author does wear a watch, but he wears it face side down under his wrist - so I can't tell what it is

As a limited edition of just 25 pieces, this version of the Ulysse Nardin Marine Diver Black Sea has a few special Game of Thrones and Night's Watch features. For the most part, it is a red accented version of the brand's popular Marine Diver, here only slightly modified for The Game of Thrones and HBO. You can see an aBlogtoWatch hands-on look at the chronograph version of the watch here. The 45.8mm wide case is in steel coated with vulcanized black rubber. Rubber also coats the rotating diver's bezel.

Red is used for the hour markers and hands as is the case with the standard Marine Diver Black Sea. Though for those who "take the black," it might have been good to make the hands and hour markers accented in gray to create a better "all-black" phantom watch look to match the theme. Ulysse Nardin has a watch like this called the Marine Diver Black Ocean (as opposed to "Sea"). The names do get confusing for sure.

Attached to the watch is a rubber strap that has two ceramic links. This is where The Night's Watch element comes in. On one of the links, Ulysse Nardin has engraved a "The Night's Watch" logo with sword, and on the other link, The Night's Watch motto of "I am the sword in the darkness" is engraved. It isn't clear whether or not there is any Game of Thrones branding on the back of the watch. Features of the Swiss automatic movement include the time, subsidiary seconds, date, and power reserve indicator.

Ulysse Nardin will produce just 25 pieces of the limited edition Marine Diver Game of Thrones watch. Each of them will be available in just one of two stores. Both are in New York City, and they are Cellini Jewelers or the new HBO Shop (that will be located at 42nd St and 6th Avenue). Price for the watch is $10,500. Now who will make me some Game of Thrones armor, swords, and fur cloaks?

Perrelet Turbine Chronograph

Image: http://ablogtowatch.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Perrelet-Turbine-Chronograph-4.jpg

The Perrelet Turbine Chronograph...

The Perrelet Turbine Chronograph was announced more than a month ahead of Baselworld and we got the chance to see this interesting and dynamic watch in person while in Switzerland for last month's show. Based on a new exclusive chronograph movement, the Turbine Chrono offers an interesting 60 minute chronograph register using a transparent center-mounted rotating dial which allows a full view of the signature spinning dial.

I love an innovative chronograph display, so whether it's a center chronograph minutes hand or a rotating sapphire minutes counter, I'm always interested when a chronograph cannot be described as simply being bi-compax or tri-compax. The Perrelet Turbine Chrono is a large and very modern watch, available in five versions and measuring 47 x 16 mm. All versions come mounted to a comfy black rubber strap and feature anti-reflective sapphire crystals front and back. Thanks to the rubber strap, the Turbine Chrono feels light enough for daily wear and, while distinctive and brash, most of the versions are not especially flashy with limited polished elements and the option of a darker tone turbine.

Perrelet's Turbine design has always been about motion and activity that promotes a truly distinctive wrist presence. The dial has two levels, a background and a spinning "turbine" disk that reacts to the subtle motion of lifting your wrist to check the time. That motion kicks the turbine into action and it spins, as though propelled by a jet engine. I had seen this on the original Turbine pieces and the way that Perrelet has preserved this cool design while incorporating a chronograph is really fantastic.

In the space between the hand set and the spinning turbine element, there is a transparent two-piece sapphire dial, comprised of a center and an outer ring. The outer ring is fixed and marked at nine o'clock with a "Min" flag, indicating where to read the current chronograph minutes measurement from the center disk. When the chronograph is started, the center sapphire disk begins to slowly rotate, showing the chronograph minutes in an unobtrusive but legible fashion. You've got to love a chronograph that is executed without the clutter and tiny sub-dials normally associated with such a complication. In addition to the chronograph, there is also a date display at six that can be viewed in the spaces between the turbine blades.

In stride with the technical elements, the Perrelet Turbine Chrono is beautifully made, with mixed finishing and many fine details from the pushers, to the tachymeter scale on the DLC treated bezel. On wrist, the Turbine Chrono is large but its size seems fitting for a watch with so much bravado. Legibility is good on all but the blacked-out ref A1079/I model, where stealth is likely of higher importance. The five versions range in their use of steel, DLC, gold and either light or darker tone turbines (see complete range above). Pricing varies from model to model but will fall between $7850 and $12,950 USD. Given the unique chronograph execution and very cool design, it would seem that Perrelet has successfully expanded the Turbine design to include an entirely usable and nicely integrated chronograph.

Patek Philippe Titanium 5004T For Only Watch 2013

For the Only Watch 2013 charity auction, Patek Philippe has produced a one-of-a-kind version of the discontinued ref. 5004 in titanium called the 5004T. While Patek Philippe has produced titanium watches in the past, they are exceedingly rare and none that I can find have been produced as part of an series. That means that all titanium Patek Philippe watches so far have been piece unique models. That last that I know of is the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712T in titanium that was actually produced also for the Only Watch auction in 2007. It yielded an auction price of 525,000 Euros.

The 5004T is a relatively small watch for men at (Sal is about to cry) 36.7mm wide. In my opinion Patek Philippe's follow-up model to the 5004 was the 5204 from 2012 (that I wrote about here). The 5204 contained the same mixtures of split second chronograph and perpetual calendar complications, and arrived in a 40mm wide 18k white gold case with beautiful oxidized black hands and hour numerals. It arrived just a year or so after Patek Philippe discontinued the 5004 family that was produced for many years.

This piece unique model of the 5004 for Only Watch 2013 has some interesting features that you aren't likely to see on many higher-production Patek watches. One thing I really like is the dial. Produced from a solid piece of gold and hand-machine engraved, the dial has a fantastic textured checker board motif in black that mixes nicely with the applied 18k white gold Arabic numeral hour markers.

There is also the matter of the strap, which is going to be controversial, but fits the special "one-of-a-kind" nature of this watch. Calf leather with a weaved carbon fiber pattern top matched with red contrast stitching, it looks a lot like something you'd find on a much less expensive watch. That isn't to say that Patek hasn't chosen the best quality strap of this style, but it is something that has been rendered in inexpensive ways too often. Patek wants you to feel as though this is a sports watch, especially with that red seconds hand. In all the color and textures are quite uncharacteristically Patek Philippe, which is probably the idea behind offering it for the upcoming charity auction.

The 5004 never contained a totally in-house made movement. Patek Philippe used and uses for the 5004T a base Lemania that has a perpetual calendar module by Patek Philippe, and is thoroughly decorated and finished by Patek Philippe. It is the caliber CHR 27-70Q. The manually wound movement is gorgeous and complicated, and the watch comes with both a solid titanium caseback, as well as a version with a sapphire crystal exhibition window.

I think it is interesting that Patek Philippe decided to use a 5004 watch as the base of its Only Watch 2013 offering. The movement is something that they freely admit is not totally produced by them. There is nothing wrong with that, but it comes at a time when Patek Philippe is quite militant about keeping details about its suppliers secret and closed. That is a shame because the Swiss watch industry is really a community of quality companies working together, and there is no manufacturer that truly makes everything in-house. Not even Rolex or Patek Philippe.

While the 5004T is a strange Patek Philippe it is nevertheless a very attractive watch. Its unusual nature will make it all that more desirable to collectors, and I anticipate an auction price of at least 700,000 Euros at the Only Watch auction in Monaco this September.

Breitling has expanded their Transocean Chronograph line, with the introduction of a GMT version into the range. The new Breitling Transocean Chronograph GMT makes for a practical and no-nonsense addition to this range of vintage inspired watches. The Transocean has been a successful line for Breitling, offering their well known name on watches that exhibit a more classic styling that is reminiscent of their Top Time models from the 1960's. You can see aBlogtoWatch hands-on review of the Breitling Chronomat 44 GMT with the same movement here.

The Transocean Chronograph GMT will be available in either steel or red gold and will measure 43mm wide. Buyers will have their choice of a white or black guilloche dial, but the entire production will be limited to 2000 units in steel and just 200 units in red gold. So, while the case size remains the same as the standard Transocean Chronograph, the limited edition GMT gets an upgraded dial along with its GMT functionality.

The Transocean Chrono GMT is powered by the Breitling B04 in-house COSC movement, offering 70+ hours of power reserve for timekeeping, the chronograph, GMT, and a date display at 4:30. The movement can be viewed via a display case back and the chronograph offers a maximum reading of 12 hours with increment displays of 30 minutes and 1/4th seconds on the central chronograph seconds hand. Local time is adjusted via the crown and the B04 features a jumping hour and date function, a crucial feature for a true GMT watch which makes it simple to update your local time without affecting the position of the minute hand. Generally speaking, I don't care for much of Breitling's sport watches as they are often quite large and generally employ a bevy of flashy polished surfaces. That said, I do like the Transocean line and this Chronograph GMT is no exception. The added detail of the guilloche dial and the pop of color from the lovely GMT hand are welcome additions to what was already a rather classic and attractive design.

If you're going for the steel version, be sure to get the optional steel mesh bracelet, not only is it very comfortable (I've experienced a similar bracelet on the Superocean Heritage 42), but it also completes the rather vintage vibe of the Transocean Chronograph GMT design. Some of my favorite Breitling design elements were born during the era of the Top Time chronograph, from the almost dressy case and lug design, to the piston pushers and sporty dial layout which they are still using today in many watches, including the Transocean Chronograph GMT. The steel version can be had on a leather strap or the steel mesh bracelet for $8950 USD, while the gold version will set you back $23,750 USD, fitted to a crocodile leather strap. With in-house movements, limited production, and a truly useful set of complications, we think that Breitling has done well to expand the Transocean line to include this new GMT model.

Introducing SUISSEMECANICA and the SM8 Collection. The company was founded by François Renoult and Juliana Arbeláez-Renoult in early 2010.

They are geographically based in Paris however their exceptional looking timepieces are made in La Chaux-de-Fonds, right in the very heart of Swiss watchmaking territory.

Currently they have one collection, but others are in development. The SM8 family consists of two beautifully designed and crafted 200m sports / diving instruments

One three hands model and a mono-pusher chronograph, each illustrating great ingenuity not just in terms of design and aesthetic (they are somewhat avant-garde, but at the same time pretty timeless), but there's some real technical innovation, too.

The watches are characterized by an impressively imposing looking (patented) Sliding Crowns Protector System that can be slid between 2 and 4 o'clock depending on which of the crowns you wish to access. It looks uber cool!

All SM8 models are also equipped with dual internal timing bezels, which are operable via crowns at 2 and 4 o'clock. One is for a 'Dual Time' function that simultaneously offers a dual time reading.

The other is a more traditional unidirectional ratcheting bezel designed for measuring dive-time with its 3D markers in C3 Luminova.

The watches are 100% Swiss made. They look absolutely amazing. They are bound to have suitable price tags. There is a load of info. on the website (in French) follow the link embedded below to discover more . . .

Introduced in 2012 at SIHH, this exceptional Roger Dubuis Skeleton Double Flying Tourbillon (Ref RDDBEX0364) timepiece has a “full black” titanium case with a 45 mm diameter. The hand-wound mechanical skeleton movement (RD01SQ) has 319 parts including the double flying tourbillons, and a power reserve of 48 hours.

Limited to just 88 pieces, I recently happened upon one at the Roman Times watch boutique located @ The Forum shops in Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas.

Price? A cool $252,000. One hell of a watch, though!

Blancpain Tourbillon Carrousel

Image: http://static.watchonista.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/watchonista_v1_560x560/watchographer/244/watches/2322-3631-55b_front_square.jpg ...

At Baselworld 2013, Blancpain introduced an intriguing watch which includes both a tourbillon and a carrousel. What makes this interesting is that both complications play a similar role in a watch — that is, to average out the effects of gravity on the watch. The tourbillon is of course the more famous and commonly seen complication of the two, but both complications require great expertise to create and as such you rarely see pieces with either complication for less than six figures. Let alone seeing both in one watch – this is, as far as I know, the first time this has been done.

In my meeting with Blancpain I did not have time to discuss the technical merits of this watch, i.e. whether having both complications provides a benefit to the time keeping accuracy of the watch, but my impression was that this watch was made “just because”, perhaps to demonstrate Blancpain’s mastery of both of these high complications. There are some technical differences between the two, for example the carrousel has its own gear train independent of the escapement unlike the tourbillon which is directly linked to the escapement, and I seem to think that Blancpain uses the carrousel complication more often than most other high end brands these days. But whether there true technical merits to the tourbillon+carrousel duo or just a demonstration of watchmaking prowess, this curious mind would like to know.

The case is fairly sizeable at 44.6mm x 11.94mm.

The watch is beautifully finished, with a fan-guilloche inner dial and an outer grand feu enamel chapter ring.

The backside is equally impressive:

Price will be around $350,000 – $400,000 USD.
