Pictures of my homeade Porsche poster
I absolutely love vintage racing posters and set out to buy a couple a couple weeks ago. To my shock some of the originals were selling for $10k plus! I ended up buying some off of a reproduction website but the glossy inkjet printed posters I received really didnt give off the old rough and bare bones look I liked in the original screenprinted and old litho posters I saw from the older 1st run posters. So I decided to make my own based off of Porsche's historic 1970 LeMans win. I decided to screenprint the posters, which is a pretty long and time consuming process, but the resulting poster turned out great. Here is the process...
First up was creating the artwork. I drew out the individual portions of the poster with ink and a brush...

Next up was to scan in all of the drawings, when I saw it all put together something was missing. So I brought the files into photoshop and added some roughed up marks to make the image look worn. This took a really long time since each individual mark was made out of dots and not just some grunge filter...

In screenprinting each individual color is printed by itself, and for each color you do you have to repeat the long process. Here is the process to print out the black you see in the image. First up I had to mix all of the colors I was going to use for the image using different combinations of ink and lots of trial and error and holding up samples to the computer monitor...

Final colors I will be using...

Next up I took my file to Staples and printed off an actual size version of just the black in the image (below it is the stack of paper I bought to print on)...

Next you buy a mesh screen stretched around an aluminum frame...

In the next step I coated the screen with a light sensitive pink emulsion...

After that you let the emulsion dry and then place the printed out image and the screen into a vacuum sealed unit that shines UV light up at the screen/image. The light passes through the white paper but cannot pass through the black ink portions, burning the black image into the screen and as a result creating a big stencil...

Next up is finally printing the image onto the paper.

Already have the previous 3 colors printed. The paper in held in place with metal tabs and then the screen is lowered onto the paper and the ink is scraped across the screen. The ink passes through the open spaces and onto the paper...

I tore each print down to size, 18"x24", by hand to give the edges a ragged look to match the worn image.
Here a some more shots of the process...
After the first two colors...

After the thirst gold Porsche crest in the bottom right...

And finally the finished print, I started with 30 sheets of paper and after mess ups along the way ended up with 25 keepers...
