Thread: Visitng New York. Help?

Anyone from NY or who travels there often...

After working and saving up some money for myself (I'm fresh out of high school) my parents are finally letting me take a trip to NY for New Years Eve with my friends. The trip will be fully funded by me and I wanted some advice from whoever has some to offer.

I'm thinking Dec. 26 - January 3rd, plus or minus a few days depending on airline fares.

I've never been before but I'm thinking of getting a hotel in Manhattan.

Any advice/hook-ups for airline tickets, hotels, transportation, etc.?

I'm going for value, but I'm willing to spend a bit more for a nicer hotel.

If you were me, what would you budget for this trip? (Taxi/bus fares, hotel costs, flight, etc.) Any other advice, things to do or places to see?

7 nights in manhattan can run you anywhere from $150/nt (2 star hotel) and up. if you haven't booked a room and are looking for a deal i would look at this forum: Hotel Deals - FlyerTalk Forums

I prefer staying near central park, but if this is your first time, it might be better (and cheaper) to stay closer to midtown.

to get around town, i believe they have 7 day metro passes available in some small market and at the airport. i highly recommend getting one because the subway fare can add up going to and from your hotel (figure $8-10/day). i always take the subway from jfk into the city too.

for things to do: that depends on what your heart desires. in may, i went to the met to see the mcqueen exhibit and spent most of time shopping (unfortunately). when i go in december, i plan on hanging out with a friend near chelsea for most of my trip.

my trip in may cost about $8,000. the trip in december will be about $1000... it all depends on what you want
