I've looked into this before when I was fresh out of college 5 years ago. After talking with someone who lived in NYC his whole life and had recently been relocated to the Cali (for work) he advised me to look into Hoboken (sp) New Jersey. He said it was just a quick train ride away from wall street (which is where I wanted to work) and that the cost of living was quite lower compared to the better parts of the city. Sorry that's the only bit of info. I got. Looking forward to the replies from everyone.
I don't know which is better getting paid or getting laid, all I know is while I'm doing one the others getting away.

NYC cost of living can go up and down quite extremely within an few blocks.. you will find apartments that are 20K to rent to apartments that are 3K.. so it would be easeir if you give us a number you can pay.. I live in NJ 7 miles from the financial district of NYC and I live here because the cost of living is quite different but I am still super close to the city.. Hoboken is also a very nice area to live in.

Depending on where you want to live will determine the price. dont get me wrong, it isnt cheap by any means. however depending on how close to the city you want to be will be the factor.

do you want to have a car?
do you want a yard? property?
do you just want an apartment on a busy block close to the action?

I grew up in Queens (Howard Beach) and bought a house on Long Island. I love to visit the city/old area but happy to be going home.

Grew up in Brooklyn and now live in the burbs (Westchestrer).

As others have said, things are so safe in Brooklyn now it scares me. Some of the worst, crime ridden areas of the 80's are now internet cafe and hookah lounge infested!! I love it though.

Pricing wise, forget it. The only inexpensive places to live in NY are upstate (a few hours out of the city).

My property taxes are 4x that of Brooklyn. Its ridiculous.

Apartments in the city can get pretty pricey. You can buy a nice house in Westchester or out on the Island for the cost of a decent apartment in a good area in the city. You can live on the island and still be close to the city. If you're looking for some gorgeous homes and have money to spend, the Hamptons may be somewhere you'd like to check out.

No matter where you live in New York you'll be spending a lot of money to do so. Upstate is also always an option if you want lots of land and don't like people too much Haha.

Hold on now! I am thinking of moving there, renting an apartment and working. Way more to go before I can even consider a house or my own place. So basically you need about $5000 a month to get you by regarding renting a place to live, food, transportation and fun stuff.

Can you go into more detail about decently here? I mean will it get me some enjoyment like going out a couple nights every month, getting into a fancy restaurant a couple of times monthly and being able to get a gym membership, decent clothes and a decent apartment? You know, a mid '20s guy enjoying his young days.
