Thread: Veyron lake-crash victim dragged into court for insurance fraud

The former owner of the 2006 Bugatti Veyron that crashed into a lake off Interstate 45 near Omega Bay, Texas, in November 2009 is being dragged into civil court by Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Company for insurance fraud. In paperwork filed in 2010, the insurance company says that it believes the Andy House, the driver of the Veyron, and Lloyd Gillespie, the financer and partial claimant to the insurance claim, conspired to drive the million-dollar Veyron into the lake in hopes to collect a $2.2-million insurance policy. Philadelphia came to this conclusion after talking to House and Joe Garza, the man who videotaped the now-infamous crash, and watching the tape. It also seems that another anonymous informant has come forward and reports that House offered to pay him to steal the Veyron and burn it to the ground.

In addition, Philadelphia says the 1,200 miles House put on the vehicle before the crash, which include errands and drives to and from work, were “excessive” and outside the scope of his collector vehicle policy. In its third claim, Philadelphia says that the Veyron—and a 2003 Ferrari Enzo also owned by House—were insured for private use only, but the vehicles were instead purchased and insured for House’s car dealership, Performance Auto Sales.

Philadelphia hopes the courts will throw out House’s insurance claim or rule that Philadelphia is only responsible for the lien against the Veyron.
