Mercedes-Benz officially announces SLS Roadster

The worst kept secret in the auto world has become official. It is no big secret that Mercedes-Benz has been working on a convertible version of the SLS Gullwing. In fact, the first unit for North America was sold to one of the owners of duPont REGISTRY at the Boca Raton Concours d' Elegance (alongside the first R8 GT and a certain Ferrari). Photos of the car testing and a brief description of the vehicle have been released by Mercedes-Benz six months in advance of its world debut at the International Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

What will set the SLS AMG Roadster apart is, of course, is its soft-top convertible mechanism. To cut the top off, Mercedes-Benz had to spend some extra time reinforcing the car’s structure and tweaking its handling. Additional support structures will add to the vehicle’s weight but allow the top to be opened or closed at speed, specifically at speeds up to 31 mph. The biggest drawback is the roadster’s design, which is no fault of Mercedes. Despite paying homage to the original, some may not be fond of the Gullwing without its trademark doors.
