Ferrari explains the 458's ergonomics
Some critics have drawn attention to the Ferrari 458 Italia ergonomics, or lack thereof, in its reviews. Automobile remarked that the driver’s surroundings “may come off as a little inelegant to some, especially the oddly shaped center protrusion from the instrument panel, which contains two air vents and a central controller for the electronic display.” Motor Trend also found fault on the car’s inside, pointing out that Ferrari has “succumbed to the multi-function mouse-knob mania now afflicting the entire auto industry,” and using the new controls are “about as intuitive as those on BMW's first crack at iDrive.” Autoweek had the most disparaging remarks about the ergonomics, calling the “entire concept…ill-conceived and downright gimmicky.”
Ferrari must see the error in its ways because it has released a quick video dedicated to the many facets of the car’s interior. Even watching the video, you can see where driver confusion can quickly arise. Indicator switches are where the radio controls might be and the windshield wiper controls are tucked away on the right side. It probably takes owners a little bit of time to reacquaint themselves to the differences between their fun car and their daily driver. The video also depicts the distinctions in driving dynamics offered by the Manettino system.
