Please do not use newspapers because they could cause micro scratches on the surface of the glass.
There is a simple process to make sparkling the glasses of cars (excepted lexan and polycarbonate).
Clean the outer surface with a mild degreaser (if too polluted use fine steel wool to remove dirt and organic residues), then apply a compound with cerium oxide and water, rubbing with a felt pad or cotton cloth.
The cerium oxide removes all micro scratches often present on the surface of glasses and renews the brightness.
Windshield will look like new, absolutely perfect.
There're no side-effects to the use of steel wool or cerium oxide.

Stoners & microfiber cloths. Sometimes I will use this purple glass cleaner that my wife bought at a home show. Works great on the stubborn spots.

If the glass has bad water spots, I use vinegar first, then Prima Clarity.
If the glass is just dirty, but no water spot, Prima Clarity.
