Restoring a Boats Gel Coat
Hi guys,
I have decided to take on task of rubbing out my boats gel coat. I have a 2008 sea ray 290 SLX with a black hull so it will be a fairly time consuming task to do it right. I have a Porter Cable 7424 DA and the Griots Garage 6in DA at my disposal. With these tools I am just wondering what will be the best pad combination to restore the finish. I was thinking about trying to use the Meguiars MF system since I have been happy with the results it has given me on my cars finish. In regards for what wax or sealant to use, does anybody have a good suggestions? Price really isn't a factor I just want a high quality product that will last in the Florida sun. Looking forward to hearing everybody's advice!
Thanks,

How oxidized is it? Depending on the oxidation level, you may get off as easy as using Collonite Fiberglass Cleaner with a white/black polishing pad. Do you have any pictures? Fiberglass/gel correction is one of the main focuses of my business.

Gelcoat fibreglass (polyester resin) is an ultra violet (UV) sensitive plastic. Though manufacturers add UV stabilizers in the manufacturing process, these protective agents weaken over time and must be replenished if continuing UV protection is desired
Collinite Fiberglass Boat Cleaner -first step cleaner (prior to polishing) restores blemished fiberglass, restores neglected finishes affected by weathering
Shurhold Buff Magic - formulated with jeweller’s rouge to be a metal polish, as well as a buffing and polishing cream. This unique formula changes as you use it. With each pass of a buffer or hand polishing the proprietary abrasives in this compound break down smaller and smaller. This effectively creates a compound that can work your finish from very dull to ultra glossy with just one product. Additionally, since you do not have to switch products, this will save you time and money. Removes: oxidation, gel coat stains, surface rust, tarnish, Plexiglas scratches and 1000 > grit scratches (Rotary speed 1000 – 12000 RPM)Last edited by TOGWT; 10-08-2012 at 11:47 AM.
