Corner Bistro, Pommes Frites and Mamouns (MacDougal or St Marks) are all good bets. TBH, I like the halal cart on w4th and university across from the Stern building much better than the 53rd st one.

Also, check out things like East Village Cheese and Russ and Daughters if you plan to be here for a while and will eat at home. Oh and if you do go to Pommes Frites,- pomegranate teriyaki sauce ftmfw.

A couple of my favorite places from when I lived up there:
Jazzy's (Varick & Charlton - Google Maps Link
I used to eat lunch here A LOT as my offices were right around the corner.

Gray's Papaya: There are a few of them around town. Best hot dogs ever.

Spark's makes a pretty mean steak and is an NYC staple.

If you want the best pizza, cross the river to the west in to Hoboken (take the ferry or PATH train or a cab through the lincoln or holland tunnels) and go down Washington in Hoboken to Benny Tudino's. Best pizza EVER. Between 9th and 10th on Washington is Joe's Deli which has the best bread and fresh mozzarella EVER. He used to make a sandwich for me that was his amazing bread (he got it from a local baker), fresh moz, fresh tomato, a LITTLE bit of shredded lettuce for some crunch and mayo. Best sandwich ever.

A lot of the restaurants I liked when I lived up there are gone. There was an awesome restaurant across the street from my offices on Hudson and Charlton that was amazing. Had the first date with the love of my life there (too bad she turned out to be a nut). They had this peppercorn steak that was served with this sauce it was just amazing.

Frankly, NYC has so many restaurants, it is hard to go wrong. From run-down holes in the wall to high end gourmet places. If it is open, that means it is probably good. Space is too expensive in NYC for restaurants to suck. lol

Oh, and I forgot about the pizza. Lombardis and Keste in Manhattan. Grimaldis and Lucalis in BK.

It looks like you've got some solid advice on here. If you come to NYC you must try Corner Bistro, Mamouns and Katz's. Ask 20 people and you'll get 20 best pizza joints, but I'm partial to Bens in Soho.

Another great burger spot is: Burger Joint at LE PARKER MERIDIEN Hotel New York
For cheap but awesome sushi hit up Yama in the West Village
For BBQ hit up Hill Country
For the best meal you'll ever eat hit up Quality Meats

Both Gingerman and Peculiar Pub have a kick-ass selection of beers. Both are good joints.
