Tried something new today
I've always been a big seafood lover. Shrimp has been a personal favorite since I can remember. The Mrs. and I took a trip to the fisherman's wharf here in DC, and I bumped into a lady that open my eyes to way shrimp can be eaten and how they taste.
A casual conversation started about the weather, then fishing season, and then to shrimp. We both made out purchases, and went to the steamers who steamed them for us. As we waited, we started back on the subject. At first I didn't believe her when she said hers will taste better hands down, so she put me to the test. She said "try one of yours, then try one of mine and see which ones better."
Gotta love those free samples, right? So I knocked back one of mine, and it tasted just as good as always. Then I tried one of hers...with one difference: the head was still on it!
I've always eaten shrimp steamed and headless...until now. To be more specific, I had to get the "good stuff" out of the head, then eat the rest. Let me just say, it was the best shrimp eating experience I've ever had! I took care of the good stuff, then to the meat. I took two bites and couldn't chew anymore; I could only suck the juices from the meat for a few seconds. As she put it, "its something about that head gettin' steamed with it that sets it off". Boy, was she right!
I'm sure some will find it disgusting, but I find it delectable. I don't see myself eating shrimp without the head, unless I don't have the choice.
Anyone ever had this experience?"Any decision based soley on one influence or another is a BAD decision!"

leaving the head on is good. you could also try steaming them in their shell.
i think they taste best when you cut them in half and slowly saute them. the shell helps prevent them from drying out too much, and acts as a buffer against heat; and let's my amateur ass figure out if they're cooked right or not (i like my shrimp raw warm.)

The head/shell locks the flavor in. Yummy... Best way to eat it. Takes more work to eat, but definitely worth it!

I've never tried them with the head still on. I always get mine raw and cook them myself in my steamer. I will have to try that next time.
My favorite way is to steam them with Yuengling instead of water and plenty of Old Bay Seasoning.

Jesse Taylor's Seafood is usually the first and only place we go to. They give us a great deal every time. We'll get 4.5 lbs for $40! Plenty to eat and throw in the freezer for later. You can't beat it. The crab deal isn't too bad either. I like to head toward the Chesapeake near Annapolis or Soloman's Island for the better crab deals. If I don't feel like the drive or we stop on our way home from work, Jesse Taylor is the place.
Next time you go, tell them your friend gets the 4.5lbs of the medium for $40. They'll give it to you, trust me."Any decision based soley on one influence or another is a BAD decision!"
